Road trip items I should take?

So I'm thinking about going to a dog expo in NJ. It's close to a 5 hour drive but me and my dad want to take Joey because they will have a talent agency doing auditions. Well we feel we can do it in one day like leave at 5am get there around 10am do the auditions and then enjoy the rest of the fun the expo has to offer and then head back home. Well since it would be just me and my dad we are going to take Joey and maybe Callie. If Callie goes not only does she love events she will be in her stroller so I will have her stroller to hold the water and other things. Don't judge me for not taking all four though because Ollie hates pet events and even though my mom and grandmother will be home he would not like being the only pup and Penny and him are very close. I also don't think we could handle all four especially while one of us is auditioning Joey it would be hard. Anyway I have not been on that long of a road trip since Callie was like 4 so any ideas on what to make sure I have, opinions and so on would be greatly appreciated.

This is the link if anyone was interested. https://www.worldexpo.dog/ Beasley from the chewy commercials who is going to be there is my trainer's dog. He is such a sweet heart. There were no other puppies in Ollie's puppy class so Ollie got to play with Beasley. He usually comes to all of Chrissy's classes. Felix the pug who is also going to be there and was in a Disney show well his owner is the owner of the local training place I use and love too. I think the owners husband is going to be doing a workshop as well as the owners nephew I think will be their with his 3 legged Pitt who is a champion weight puller. It seems like they have a huge set up of booths and stuff too.

I've got no advice but will be very glad to listen to others, since we have a long trip (plane + long drive) coming up next week. I was thinking about making a little checklist before going, to not forget anything important.

Hey you're gonna be in my neck of the woods lol.

Since it's just a day trip, for me I would take just water, food, treats, paper towels and poop bags.

My suggestion to anyone that travels with their dog that drink your home tap water is to take a gallon of your tap water.

Speaking from my own personal experience, when I had my girls they drank the house tap water, a change in water always gave them loose to very loose stools. If I went to visit friends or family I always took a gallon of water (I had a pack of 3 Divas)

Cody only drinks Poland Spring water, so water for me is a must.

We drive up I-95 (1,200 miles each way) from our home in Florida to family in upstate NY several times a year. We carry more with them than we did for trips with our kids...but we stay for a time and need pens, beds, etc. The only thing that I would add for a day trip would be a classical music CD. There is research that classical music calms dogs, and all three of mine respond well if there is a traffic jam, too many trucks, or emergency vehicles. You can see their body language react! We always leave the classical music channel on when we leave them alone in the house too.

I believe it is good to occasionally take the doggies out separately, just like kids. I used to take my boys places individually.



We have only been on one long road trip and took:
bottled water/food/bowls
poopy bags
wipes
beds
crate and xpen for emergency use
harness and leash

I agree with everyone so far on what to take but I have one dog that gets car sick and also refuses to pee in unknown territory so I take pee pads to cover the car seat and so that my cautious pee pal will go when I want them to. I also get anxiety meds for Dixie because she is prone to freak outs where her little heart goes crazy in unfamiliar territory. But those are just my neurotic dog issues...you may not have those at all.😊

For your pup that gets car sick. Cody is a rescue he was 2 1/2 when I got him, after his 2nd time in the car and getting car sick I bought him a booster seat that is elevated off the seat,it can be adjusted for height, I have his high enough that he can see out of the window, that was 6 years ago, he has never gotten car sick again. Do you put your babies is a booster seat or keep them on the passenger seats.

I do have booster seats but she will still get carsick if we go for more than about 30 minutes. The vet said to try Benadryl next time we need to go for a longer trip.

Too bad the booster seat didn't work out for you, makes even vet trips an ordeal for the pups.

I don't really have any advice. Gidget loves to go for rides in the car. I have a booster seat (basket) that attaches to the head rest. It's large enough for her to lay down or sit up and look out the window. She loves her car rides. She doesn't get car sick so that's one thing I don't have to worry about. If I say "go" it's almost like she's saying back to me "ok, let's get going". She's a real joy to travel with.

So I have decided I’m just taking Joey this time. If the dog expo is really as great as they are saying we are going to feel it out and next year maybe everyone will go and we will rent a hotel room. Thanks for all the ideas on what to bring I will be writing up my list today.

This is what my doggy "diaper bag" looks like for day trips. Minus the crate or ex-pen, but I have a carrier instead or a large purse. I do have a car seat in the car, which I hope to upgrade soon cause JakJak HATES it.

I am excited to use it as I am overdue for a new one - our current bag is literally falling apart lol. I'll give a review on it once I get it.

But for road trips, I like to be extra prepared in case I decided to stay longer or whatever the case may be.

So I always bring their regular food for meals as well as some treats.
- Poop bags
- Wipes
- Multiple types of leashes (usually a Flexi for each, a 4ft and a 6ft, for different occasions lol)
- Extra harness just in case one malfunctions or is lost.
- Collar and tags
- Water jug and water sprayer stays in the back of my car usually
- Bed possibly
- Car seat
- Travel bowls for water or food
