ADVICE for Tiny yorkie needing surgery

My Ziggie is 2lbs 6oz (1yr and 11 months old) and has to have surgery to have two baby teeth removed. His teeth are wonderful but he does have 2 nasty lil baby teeth that are brown and very loose. He has had to be on antibiotics once already because of them.

He will be having surgery at UC DAVIS (one of the best in the country) but I’m STILL TERRIFIED. I don’t know what to do. I know these teeth can cause a lot of problems for him in the future, not to mention they probably hurt him now. I’m just so scared. I have bad anxiety and I don’t know how to just go through with it.

Any advice on things to look out for or ask? Any experiences with your tiny babies and surgeries? Anything helps

I don’t think any of us handle our babies going under anesthesia really well. If you have done the pre surgery blood work everything should be ok. Are you getting him neutered at the same time? It’s a good idea to do both at the same time.

I understand your anxiety and fear. When my boys have to go under anesthesia, I am very emotional. Try to focus on positive outcomes: I've known many people with tiny Yorkies who have had teeth removal and spay/neuter surgery without any problem. My neighbor's tiny girl had to have ALL of her baby teeth removed under anesthesia. She went to an average vet's office.

Yes I agree, I have read so many threads and everyone seems just As worried about their babies being sedated. UC Davis does a FULL WORKUP the day before the procedure which does include bloodwork. They also have a anesthetist dedicated to watching your baby through the entire process. I do not plan to neuter him at all so we won’t be doing that. It will be just the 2 teeth removed and cleaning if needed.

So happy your neighbors baby went through ok and even at just a regular vet! That helps ease my mind a little. I know what you mean about being emotional. I am so afraid my anxiety will get the best of me so I am trying very hard to work through this before the time comes. I just hope everything goes well and that I can make sure I get it done.

I know neglecting dental is car more dangerous for my timy babe. I’ve waited 2 years and these nasty lil friends just will NOT FALL OUT. They are literally hanging by a thread poor baby.

It’s much better for his health and he will live longer if neutered. I would really think about doing it at the same time. It would suck to have to do emergency surgery due to the prostate swelling and keeping him from using the bathroom. It also keeps them from getting cancer. It increases their life span by 3 to 5 %. Just something to concider.

I won’t be neutering, you can’t push your views on others. You tried doing it on another post of mine a while back. I do remember. I chose to give you a chance but knew you’d do the same again as soon as I said I wasn’t neutering.

Bottom line is, he is MY DOG and it is MY CHOICE to make. Not yours.

Well you add facts a lot. I’m very educated and very aware of risks etc. my baby will not be neutered. This post is about his dental surgery, so thanks for the tips on that.

That is fine, but I do take it that it is ok to debate here since all opinons are welcome am I correct?

I am inclined to state that my saying she was pushing her views on me, was in fact an opinion. I understand not everyone agreeing with what I choose to do with my baby, but in all fairness HE IS MINE. That should be respected.

Nothing was being pushed on you. Lovetodream was stating a medical fact on reason why a male should be neutered. There will be other new ppl reading this thread that may not realize not neutering a male can cause testicular cancer. Because you have done your homework and know the danger you are putting your boy at risk of getting does not mean other new yorkie owners have done their homework.

While there are many members on this site, there are many members who are full of knowledge and I have personally posted to seek their advice before—that includes Lovetodream88 and Wylie’s mom, as well as others. I don’t think there was any bad intent there, and it’s always good to know the pros and cons of any decision we make regarding our pups. You make the choices you want for your pup at the end of the day.

My little guy is 2.5 years old and just has his first dental cleaning. They did the blood work right before his appointment and did a full physical exam that morning as well. I was so anxious and teary eyed leaving him. I was honest with the vet with my concerns and he was really reassuring. Just do the bloodwork before and I’m sure he will be just fine. Good luck!
