Yorkie Yakker | Daycare theory Hi all- My 23 week puppy has been in daycare since he was 16 weeks with a day or so a week with me at work inbetween (no including weekends with me). Daycare for him is either with a single person and her older yorkie that he loves like his own big brother or with another sitter who keeps up to two other dogs at the same time, not always the same dogs. I have been working on his training and decided to get a behaviourist to help me help me because I am pretty clueless beyond youtube. While interviewing them, one mentioned to me that having my little one in daycare could have a detrimental impact on our relationship because he would become too interested in being with other dogs and therefore not listen to me when other dogs were around (e.g. not coming when called in the park, or running off). For anyone who has an older dog who goes to daycare or spends a lot of time other dogs that are not their own, have you found this to be the case? Do you find that your yorkie is less interested in you / doesn’t listen reliably when other dogs are around? |

| I have four dogs and when we train whether its by splitting them up or doing it together they all listen to me. I personally don't think it will effect your relationship. The only real thing I see happening are the puppy possibly picking up bad behaviors from the other dogs. So I disagree with them.

| Clearly the main goal here is that your pup will come/sit when you tell him to irregardless of who or what is interesting/distracting him.

| I have no day care experience, what I can add is, my kid knows many commands and tricks, he's fine with his commands in the house, (no distractions) when we are out and about there are many distractions and it's hard for me to get his attention. What I am doing is getting him around more ppl, more distractions so he gets use to noise and movement and re-enforcing the watch me command. I don't agree with what this behaviorist told you. yorkiemini is 100% correct.

Yorkie Yakker | Thank you all for your thoughts. I was beginning to get worried that my whole dog-life plan was flawed! I did take Toto to the park yesterday and though there were plenty of other dogs, when I let him off lead to run free he still came when I called him away from his newfound friends. So far so good! |
