| Bad Breath Ok...so Lucky has had some pretty bad breath here lately! I don't know what to do! I have doggie breath mints that I give him but that doesn't work. Does anybody have any suggestions for something I can give him to make it better? I don't give him greenies so anything besides that. Thanks in advance!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | How old is Lucky and does he have double teeth by any chance ? When the adult teeth start pushing up it can crowd the baby teeth and cause some stinky breath....Cheri's did that and when she got her baby teeth that didn't fall out on their own pulled - her breath went right back to being CUTE puppy breath Then there's getting out the toothbrush and trying to brush everyday - that helps alot.... |

| How old is Lucky? Really shouldn't have bad breath unless they have a big build up of tarter (lift gums and if the teeth are grey, green or black) or infected teeth (harder to tell)? Then it is time for a vet visit and have your babies teeth cleaned but this is for an older dog not a puppy. Is it just puppy breath smell? and your babies teeth are pearly white?

| Lucky is 11 months old & has had all his baby teethed pulled. I checked his teeth & there is no tartar build-up, they are white.

| Okay this is going to sound dumb but please don't take it personal...do you know what puppy breath smells like? if your answer is yes and his breath has changed since he was younger then you might want to have your vet look to make sure there is not an infected tooth. Sorry to say some Yorkies have problems with teeth at a very young age.

| Thanks, & yes I do know what puppy breath smells like. Hmm....well that will suck if it is an infected tooth. Do you know what the vet will do if it is? And is there any way for me to tell if a tooth is infected?

| Whew, I sure didn't want to offend you with the question but I had to ask No, I don't know a way to check for bad teeth, I have always used the smell test just like you are doing. Maybe look and see if any of his gums are red but this is just a guess. My guess would be the vet will have to pull it. I have had 2 year old dogs come into rescue and we have had to pull 8 teeth...so sad but the dogs do okay and are much happier without the pain. Just remember infected teeth can infect a Yorkies heart and other organs so in the big picture a pulled tooth isn't the end of the world. Okay one other dumb question...What is your little one eating? Could it be from the food?

| I have him on a mix of Wellness Puppy and Innova Puppy. He gets no wet food & treats occasionally. No human food unless its accidentally dropped & he gets it before we can! Thanks for all your replies, I really appreciate it. Looks like I will probably take him to the vet & have him look at his teeth & clean them. They don't have to put the dog under to get teeth cleaned do they?

| Let your vet look at his teeth and smell his breath. Yes they do have to go under to have their teeth cleaned so it is not something you want to do unless there is a problem or way to much tarter built up on their teeth. Are you brushing his teeth? Lots of product in Petstores to help you do this.

| I would think that your puppy is a little young to have any real tarter buildup or bad teeth. This is off the subject a little, but I swear that my Yorkie has a little smell that isn't pleasant around his face from time to time. It would be easy for me to think that it's his breath - but it really isn't. It's more around his face -especially the area where his eyes drain. I have found that washing his face well with a damp cloth helps remove this odor. And - I have noticed several other posts where people feel that this eye drainage or or running - has some sort of odor. Anyway - my pup gets his face washed and his eyes cleaned often. And this helps keep my puppy smelling good. Good luck! Carol Jean |
