| Sir Bentley Happy Sunday to you all! I am a first time puppy mom. We acquired Sir Bentley on June 1st from a “breeder” my father knew and had purchased a pup from. Being a new mom, I immediately called for vet appointment and was told he was too young to have come home to me. I called my father who said mom had weaned him and other pups. Also, he was being fed wet dog food but puppy food. I had to purchase some of it to get him used to new food. He is currently eating Blue Buffalo. He has been to vet and got 1st vaccine. Am I supposed to have a birth certificate? I got him puppy insurance as well and we have puppy orientation today and they will tell us if we need to wait longer for other classes. What else should I be doing? We are in the process of looking for car seat and stroller. Sir Bentley was weighed Thursday, June 7 and was 2.5 lbs. we haven’t taken him out for potty or walks because he isn’t fully vaccinated. My dad thinks I’m being overprotective because his pup is out already (he has three other dogs at home). I do have him in a feeding schedule. I’m not sure what else to say except we love our fur baby and want to do what’s best for him. |

Has someone responded to this elsewhere? I was thinking maybe because you put it in pictures. I don't know. I'm a new Yorkie owner, so I don't have much experience and can't really help too much. How old is the pup? There's a debate. My Yorkie book said 12 weeks. My brother--who breeds hunting dogs and labs etc--says 6 to 8. | |

The deed is done and you now have the lil boy, no fault on your part, and I highly commend you for reaching out and asking your questions, shows you will be an excellent yorkie mommy. Blue Buffalo is not a good quality of food to be feeding your baby, there have been many recalls on their food, is that what the breeder was feeding him, I am asking because puppies should stay on what ever food the breeder was feeding him so he doesn't get an upset tummy. Right now Sir Bentley is going through many changes, and changing his food is not recommended. If the breeder was feeding him Blue Buffalo it was not a wise choice on their part. Many member suggest another brand of puppy food which I cannot remember what it is, I am sure they will chime in with their advise and suggestions. This is a community that is devoted to the well being of yorkies and other breeds as well, so any questions you should have just start a new tread and ask away. Members are very helpful in sharing their experience, knowledge, suggestions and advise. It's all about the dogs. Your vet is correct that you not take the puppy outdoors, nor mingle with strangers or other dogs until he is fully vaccinated which is about 5 or 6 months old. It is advised / suggested to wait 2 weeks after his last vaccine to introduce him to his new world, reason being, give the vaccine 2 weeks to get into his system to ensure he is fully protected. There is no such thing as a puppy birth certificate (so cute and funny lol) If the breeder's mating pair are AKC registered, the breeder would have registered that litter with the AKC and you would have been given his AKC paper to register him. I am assuming you received no such paper and reason you ask about puppy birth certificate. Yorkies are a super energetic breed, your puppy will soon be zooming through your home if he hasn't done so already lol, they are full of charm and personality, and before you even realize it, you will be owned by a yorkie and giving in to all his demands lol. Good luck and keep us updated on Sir Bentley's new life and adventures.

| Ok I found the puppy food many members suggest is a good quality puppy food, it is Royal Canin, I believe there is a Royal Canin Yorkshire puppy food, if not any Royal Canin puppy food is ok. I do suggest stop feeding him the Blue Buffalo as that company has had many law suits filed against them and many recalls on their dog foods. When ever you change a dogs food it must be a slow and gradual transition to avoid the dog / puppy getting diarrhea which can lead into dehydration. Over a period of 7 days add small amounts of new food mixed in with the food the pup is eating increasing the amount of new food everyday until pup is eating just new food. Members suggest free feeding puppies, meaning always have food in their bowl so they can graze all day. There is no such thing as an over weight puppy. Yorkies are high energy puppies and will burn off calories fast. With wet dog food this cannot be done, I would feed the puppy 3 times a day instead of twice a day due to his weight as of June 7th, he is a tiny lil guy and needs plenty of good quality food.

| Congratulations on you new baby, Sir Bentley. You cannot be too careful or too protective of these little ones. His life depends on your care and watchfulness. He will become your little shadow and you will know a love like no other. He's tiny tiny and very vulnerable and looks to you to provide and protect...and I think you're already being very smart about his care! Remain diligent and vigilant and ask every question you can think of--there are no "dumb" questions and people love to help. Matese is one of thee most knowledgeable, most caring, most compassionate, most understanding, sweet an funny "guides" one could hope for...I, too, love the puppy birth certificate; and you, too, sound very sweet! |

| Thank you all for your kind replies. Here are a few updates: Sir Bentley gained 1.1 lbs at his last vet appointment this past Thursday. He got another shot. We are still not taking him outside for walks but we did purchase a stroller for him and he loves it. We work full time and hate to leave him all alone so when I have errands to run, he comes alone with the family. During the days, he stays home with my mom who lives downstairs. He had his first grooming appointment, a "puppy cut". His nails were LONG. He is still eating the Blue Buffalo (I had not read these messages). Initially, the BYB was giving him Pedigree for adult dogs. I started off mixing that with Simply Nourish a brand that Pet Smart sells and he liked it but then I heard form friends he should be eating Blue, so I switched that. It's been about two weeks. I was mixing the puppy wet food with a small amount of the crunchy pet food and he was eating it. But, since his vaccine, his appetite has gone down. This morning, I put his breakfast out at his schedule feeding time 6:30 a.m. and he barely touched it which is odd. It's 8:20 a.m. as I write this and he hasn't wanted to eat. He did drink water. Should I be worried? I sat with him for over 30 minutes and cuddled, tickled, and basically let him chew my finger and he seemed content, not wimpering or anything but didn't want to eat. His bowel movements have been find. I'm worried! |

| What date did he get his shot, some puppies have dif. reactions to vaccines. Try sprinkling a small amount of grated parmesan cheese on top of his food, the pungent smell usually will get their taste buds going. If that doesn't work buy a package of boneless chicken cutlets trim off any fat, boil one cutlet until it is cooked, give him a tiny piece to taste, then shred a small amount over his food. Babies have to eat, if he still doesn't eat his wet food feed him small amounts of the chicken just so he has food in this tummy, there is no nutrition in chicken so you don't want to keep him on just plain chicken for a long period of time. If he hasn't eaten what you feel is a substantial amount of food by late this afternoon I would call your vet an hour before they close and tell your vet he is not eating. This baby has to eat. I hate to see many changes of food in such a young puppy but you have to get him off that Blue Buffalo food and onto Royal Canin for puppies, do a longer transition, 10 days, each day add a small, tiny amount of Royal Canin to the Blue with the kibble, every day increase the Royal Canin amount, at day 10 he should be eating only Royal Canin. Taking him out in the stroller is good, taking him to groomer before he has had all his vaccines is not good, your vet will / can trim his nails usually at no charge. Please keep us updated of Sir Bentley.
