| Vaccination Advice Hello all! I'm very new to this forum, as I've just made my profile a couple days ago. However, wayyyy before I even thought I'd be actually getting a Yorkie, I discovered this forum and have been lurking on and off because I was always interested in this adorable breed. I'm not new to the world of being a dog parent, since I had my first dog for ten years before she passed, and now I have a boy (not a Yorkie) who I've had since he was 10 weeks old and he'll now be 3 years old in July! However, I am new to being a Yorkie mom and I'm super glad that this community exists so that I can ask questions and get advice first hand! So, I'm getting my new Yorkie girl in July and I'm extremely excited! However, I've had some bad experiences with vaccinations with my boy, so I'm very cautious with vaccinations now. The problem is, though, that his vet gives a lot of them together at the same time so I don't really know which ones to blame for any side effects. The only one I know I'm never giving any of my dogs again is the Lyme one, because it made him EXTREMELY sore and he wouldn't even try to walk for a few days because it would hurt him and even when I picked him up to move him, he cried. It broke my heart. So after that I've never given him that shot and absolutely will never do it again. However, he's become afraid of all of the areas of my house that have hard flooring as opposed to carpet, when he was never like that before and no incidents ever happened to him in my home (I'm completely sure that nothing happened to make him scared). He started exhibiting this after he got his vaccinations, but again, I don't know which one to blame. I'm thinking rabies but I can't be 100% sure. So now, I'm just wondering if you guys have any vaccines that you stay away from when it comes to your babies, and why? I don't want to hurt her by trying to protect her like I feel like I did with my boy unknowingly (and I'd stop giving them to my boy as well). Any and all responses would be greatly appreciated. | If you want to use the most conservative vaccination protocol, you can follow Dr. Jean Dodd's vaccination protocol for core vaccinations found here: Dr. Jean Dodds' Pet Health Resource Blog | 2016 Dodds Vaccination Protocol for Dogs The only caveat is that titers aren't that reliable, so I would also get the three year boosters at the bare minimum. Rabies vaccination is required by law, and should be given according to the legal requirements. It should be given at a different time than the other vaccinations (a couple of weeks apart from the others)--that way, you can minimize the effect of giving too many vaccinations at once, and also maybe determine which, if any, of the vaccinations are giving a bad reaction and plan accordingly. Non-core vaccinations (ones that are not mandatory, and vary depending on whether the disease in question is a problem in your part of the country) such as Lyme disease, Bordatella, or Leptospirosis are up to you, but if you give them, you can also give them at a different time from the others. Keep in mind, though, that if you use a groomer or board your dog, they may require some of the non-core vaccinations (most commonly, Bordatella). If you get the Bordatella vaccination, get the injected vaccine, not the nasal vaccine. It has fewer side effects. That said, when we got our Bella, we were not aware of this vaccination protocol and her core vaccines and rabies vaccine were given at the same time, as well as some of the non-core vaccines and she didn't have any problems other than a little sleepiness that she got over quickly. Bella is a little tank. Last edited by pstinard; 05-27-2017 at 05:24 AM. |

| Thank you for the response! The website is very helpful! And I'm glad that your Bella didn't have any weird side effects to the vaccines |

| I have a little boy that has reactions so we give one shot at a time, he gets Benadryl before and then pain meds the day of and the day after. Parvo and distemper are very important they should get a combo shot of those 3 times as a puppy but not before 8 weeks old. Then they get a booster at 1 year old and then it's generally every 3 years after that. With rabies you have to go by your state law. Lyme, bordatella, and Lepto are considered non core and optional. I did Lyme because I'm in a heavy Lyme area and I saw lots of cases of Lyme popping up and not caught in time and essentially killing the dog. I don't do Lepto because it's not a super big thing here and I don't hike or go around bodies of water with them. I do bordatella because I take my dogs to a lot of dog events and I normally use a mobile groomer but have had to take them in a few times and most groomers require it. Vaccines are a good thing.

| Thank you for your response! I know that vaccines are necessary, but sometimes not all of them are and my boy's vet didn't tell us about side effects or which vaccines were necessary and which were optional when we were getting him vaccinated. He is currently up to date on all of his shots (besides Lyme because again, I opt to not give him that one) but I just wanted to see if any specific vaccine bothered any of your babies and what happened to them after they got it so that I can be more informed by real people who experienced the side effects first hand with their babies. Sometimes some vaccines hurt more than help and I would feel badly if she was negatively affected by something that was supposed to help her. I don't want them to change her personality or make her scared of things, like I suspect happened to my boy |

Save Hi and welcome . So glad you came out of lurking! And congrats on your yorkie! So the first question I have is...if your vet is the type who wants to give a bunch of vax at once...why are you still going to him...? I'd find a vet who is line w/ your preferences and in line with what's the safest route. Second - it's absolutely fine to give Benadryl about 45 mins prior to ANY vaccine to avoid reactions. My vet hasn't seen a single reaction in her 30 years from any dog who was first given Benadryl. Dose is 1-2mg/pound. I'm a vaccine minimalist - so I only get the core vaccines, and I do not get bordetella.

Thank you! I actually recently saw a different vet who I prefer over the last one, but this was after his last round of shots. I want to only get the core ones from now on also, except I need them to get bordetella in case I need them to stay at a babysitter unfortunately. Thank you so much for your response! I will definitely request only the necessities next time!

| We only do one vaccine at a time. If your vet does not want to do that then it may be time to find another one.

| My boy is 6 yo, I do one vaccine at a time with two weeks in between. He's a rescue I don't know if he would have any reaction to multi vacs, I won't chance it. I insist on this.

| One at a time with two weeks in between sounds like a good timeline. Thank you for sharing the way you give your baby vaccinations! I'll probably end up stealing your regimen for my babies! |

| When my boys were getting their first round of shots we were at the vets office almost every other week for 2 months for shots as our vet recommended. I think they had two shots the 1st visit then 1 every time after that. We get the Lyme vaccine for them as I had a yorkie growing up and within two weeks of her getting diagnosed with lyme disease she died of renal failure... I rather a reaction than the alternitive. Lukily my babies have never had a bad reaction to shots but if they do they will be getting Benadryl before from that time on. |

I'm sorry about your yorkie who passed that is scary. I suppose you're right- a reaction is better than the alternative. Thank you everyone for the responses, I will definitely take a lot of your advice. I can't wait to get her. I will be posting pictures when I finally have her
