What's up with vets not willing to do Emergency surgery? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

My daughters rag doll cat ate thread and was wrapped around his intestines. The vet said he has to have surgery to save the cats life but he was booked and couldn't do it. This was at 11 this morning. We all called every vet in town and out of town. Not one vet would do it. There is a ER vet here so she took him in when they opened at 5:00 tonight. She paid them $2400 up front for surgery. The cat had to wait 7 1/2 hours for surgery.. 13 hours after the vet said had to have it right away. Don't vets have some sort of code of ethics? She was willing to pay more because it was a emergency. That's just awful to let a animal suffer. Now they said it might not live anyways. That was after they took her money of course and let it sit for 7 hours!

That's rather sad to hear... Makes me wonder if the said individuals even have ethics....

I think it's plain thievery if they just make the patient wait hours on end while taking the payment upfront that's kind of idk... skeevy...

I hope the cat lives, and I hope you find a more caring vet in the future.

I'm so sorry to hear what happened with your daughter's poor kitty. It is quite shocking that her vet would not clear his/her schedule for such an emergency - especially when it is during office hours. Prayers for the little one.

My previous vet who I was with for over 25 years gave me his home phone number in case of an emergency (which thank goodness I never had to use). When I moved, I could not find a vet who would do this - guess I was spoiled. I now have an excellent vet, but if there is an emergency after hours, I will need to take my babies to an emergency clinic where I have no idea how good the vet is. This terrifies me!

That's terrible. Never heard of that. Maybe they had some pretty serious emergencies. My vet always gets emergencies in.

I'm blessed to live in a town with a veterinary college. You can bet your life that they would have done the surgery on an emergency basis right away--that's how they train students to be better vets. It looks like the lesson hasn't been learned by all veterinarians

Oh my goodness I am sorry your daughter had to go thru this with her cat.

I am so glad that my Vet would never do something like that, they always make time for any emergencies.

I hope your daughters kitty cat is doing OK.

Sending good thoughts for your daughter's cat. I hope he recovers.

I do think it depends on the vet, and I would start researching vets offices now. Our vet will drop everything for an emergency surgery. He also fits us in for emergency appointments.

I'm so sorry your daughter had this bad experience.

We called at least 12 vets. I'm thinking they are all together to send emergencies to the ER clinic. But they don't open till 5pm.. coincidence the vets in town close at 5? She uses 2 vets in town, my sister has 2 vets, mom one vet and I have been to 3 vets in town. None of those would do the surgery.
They said if he makes it thru 5 days he is good. I saw all the thread he had in there and it was probably 5-7 feet. It was stuck on his tongue all the way into his intestines. They said if it waited much longer he would have lost some intestines and the outcome grim.

She was the first one at the ER and someone who shut her cats tail in the car door went in before Spongebob surgery. Yes her 6 yr old named the cat. Boy I felt stupid calling for a update on spongebob
