Ready to tear my hair out! Ok, that might have been a little bit of an exaggeration, but I'm becoming increasingly frustrated over the last couple of weeks. We have a 8 1/2 month old girl, and her potty training is going....ok. She was doing great for a solid couple weeks. Only an accident here or there, but it seems like we digressed over the last couple weeks. She seems to follow a pretty routine potty schedule. But not always. And when she gets off schedule, she always goes in the apartment. She'll come right in after wandering around outside for a half hour and pee right on the floor Thankfully we have hardwood floors so it is an easy cleanup and no carpets are stained. But we are moving in a couple months and our new apartment has all carpet, which will make it much more difficult to notice if she went in the house or not. Will she ever reach a point when she "knows" that going in the house is wrong? What is the average time frame for being completely potty trained? We have followed online guides and suggestions since we brought her home, but it seems over the last couple months, she's making no progress. Any help?

Wow all carpet you say. My girls still have accidents now and then and Bella is almost 4 put we do use pee pads. Maybe someone that does outdoor training has a different though on it. I would say there will be accidents .

Has this baby girl been spayed ? if not then she may be trying to come into heat. If she's been spayed she may be experiencing some spay incontinence.

do you " cue" her when she potties outside? Say something like " go potty" right when she goes and praise her like crazy ... I am currently potty training a mill puppy and I have even given her treats for potty outside ( something tiny and super tasty). Bella - 5 months is going outside IF I am there with her but is still working on going through the doggie door alone - she has started to come up to me and ask to go out though which is HUGE. I still have to remind her to go out every 2 hours or so... But if the weather is yucky there are accidents. I have trained a bunch of dogs and I am used to accidents until age 1 and beyond with the tiny toy breeds ... eventually they all get it ... With Pixie - my 6 lb Maltese mix we thought she would always stay " leaky" in inclement weather but no ... she is 5 now and will go out even in a blizzard - but " go" close to the door and she is rocket fast! As said before - it might be related to coming in heat if she is not spayed but it might also just be one of those small dog things ... keep up the good work and don't worry too much ... she will train eventually - taking longer than a year to potty train is not unusual for small dogs. And for the new apartment ... get a piece of linoleum ( from the remnant section at your home improvement store) and put it over a section of your carpet - you can put up a gate for your baby, a play yard or such to confine her when you are not there to watch - our dogs sleep in our washing/dryer room because it doesn't have carpet... and we own a carpet cleaner of course ...

I know it is more difficult but I have found that a dog will potty more easily when you take it for a walk. Something about the movement and smells of other animals that gets the fluids moving. Most dogs, male and female, have a natural instinct to mark an area especially when they smell other animals like cats, dogs squirrels, etc. They usually want to see on it. Besides they love getting out and need the exercise anyway. It sounds like your dog does not understand why she is outside. When training to go outside in a yard you need to take the pup out and stand with it until the business is done. It's best to have one place in the yard to take her to at first. Give lots of praise and a treat when she does go. Try tethering her to you so she can't wander off while you are inside and have an accident. With her being close to you all the time you can watch for signals that she gives that show that she needs to go out. Some people get towels or a pad that the pup has peed on and take it to a particular place where the pup is supposed to go potty. The scent will help remind her why she is out there. Once you establish a means of communicating to your pup what you want her to do you are more than half way there. Once she understands she will be much more agreeable. Hopefully the place you are moving to does not have any past puppy accidents and you can go on super surveillance and keep her from going potty inside.

about a week later, we have gotten better. we haven't had an accident the last 3 or 4 days. it seems like she knows it's "right" to go potty outside. whenever we take her out, she goes. but i feel like she doesn't know that it's "wrong" to potty inside. does that make sense?

Hi, I have not posted in ages, but here I am. I got help from this forum during potty training, so I feel I can pay it forward a bit. Even if it is all carpet, I would keep her in a restricted area, maybe a large area penned with gates (we used boxes). We made Dinky stay in the kitchen during the day until he consistently went potty outside. Then when he slipped up, we went back to the kitchen. He totally understood what the deal was and he cooperated again. He'll be 7 in February, and he is great about going potty. It took along time to train him!

All carpets would honestly scare me. Mine never have accidents on my tile or hardwood floors but when I allow them in rooms with carpet I have to put diapers on them. Of all my friends that have yorkies only one of them doesn't have this problem. I don't know what it is about yorkies and carpet but if anyone knows a way to keep them from having accidents on carpets please share!

My new little adopted senior came trained. Yeah! However, my daughter was having trouble having her darling two year old to consistently be clean in the house. My daughter had an extended work assignment which resulted in my having her dog for seven weeks. She started with about one lapse each day, so I did what I've always did with my collies, I taught her to go on command. All my dogs do. Then, if I am faithful to bringing her out regularly, she is clean in the house. I value that highly. Gew
