Piper! Pipe? Piippperrrr!?! - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Piper has come a long way since coming into my life and the ways in which she's progressed make me so very happy. Piper will now not only look me in the eye, but will actually 'stare me down' and that little direct gaze of hers means everything to me. She know longer tries to dart out the door, as I believe she has come to know that she is safely home. She is just now learning to sit--a biggie because early on any gentle 'command' caused her to lower her head and retreat under couch. And when inside, she comes when I call. Which brings me to the question, is Piper a rarity in that when she's outside, backyard, park, etc., she will often (not always) turn a deaf ear to me? Nothing, but nothing I say; no sound I make, no bribe, no threat, no loud demand, no soft cajoling--NOTHING I do gets a response. It's like I don't exist. I no longer take this behavior personally (which caused me tears and insecurity at times), but am curious as to whether or not anyone else has experienced the same behavior/attitude with your canine. As I said, I'm delighted with Piper--all she's become and all those little Piper-isms that make her unique. The ol' unconditional love thing--or as my mom would say, "Love her warts and all..." My, my how I do go on...

I'm very curious what Pipe's back story is? (I hope you don't mind me calling her pipe, I hear you "say" it on here!) Did you get her as a puppy? It hurts my heart to think any one was cruel to that little sweetie.

that being said... no.. Chewie hasn't done that. I'm sure someone else 'round here has experienced that, though!!! I sing to Chewie if I can't find her- sometimes she's upstairs for instance. I sing to the tune of Sherry Baby "Cheee-oooo-ieee.. Chewie baby! Chew-hew-ieee.... and she's always there by that last Chewie.

Piper has so many of Chewie's mannerisms in pictures you post, that she's one of the little gals that always sticks out on here. I'd love to hear how she came into your life.

It's like miss Piper has an internal yorkie struggle btwn being a love bug and an independent little gal. Either that, or she just has that outdoor "yorkie selective hearing" thing....!

Definitely selective hearing. My yorkies have it too! Haha. Sometimes I'll call their names and I'll see their ears twitch but they don't even look up. Then I'll say "treat" and miraculously they can hear and both look up or come over lol.

Piper has that amazing Yorkie determination combined with stubbornness that would be the envy of any mule, and yes, Ann, I believe you called it with the independent streak.** She's such a goofy, fun, little lamb chop and, as you all know, quite perfect. Realizing her propensity to damn-the-torpedoes, I made her that 25' leash so she can fall behind then run full-tilt in order to get waaay ahead (ohmygosh, is there anything cuter than a little Yorkie running full speed, little audio units flattened and just lovin' life?!).
JennaPenny, By all means you may call her Pipe; I think it's very sweet of you! We got ourselves a couple of kookie canines, yes?! Wouldn't have 'em any other way!
**So duh-to-me, when re-reading above, light bulb moment.. maybe Piper's first couple of years were ones of semi-confinement and puppies? She is totally dog friendly and has never reacted to any excited barking, yelping in-yard dogs--at allll. And whereas, initially, Pipe was quite shy with people--submissive and a bit reluctant, nowadays I happily apologize for her rather pushy behavior in going up to fellow shoppers. Soo, I wonder if it makes any sense to think that perhaps she just doesn't ever want anyone else to have complete and utter control over her little self--thus 'explaining' the bomb-proof side of her not hearing or acknowledging me (again, expected but doesn't happen all the time). And now I really will shut-up cuz geez, I make myself nuts

Lol...once again, you remind me of, well, me

. In terms of analyzing these kiddos and trying to figure them out. Like us, they are indeed complex little beings and have their reasons for the way they behave, though they can't tell us about it...SO wish they could!

I'm constantly trying to figure out my little neurotic, dramatic Chi, Arthur, whom I got at age 6 from the shelter where I volunteer. He has many, many, many stories and mysteries inside of him...which I can only guess at. I wish he could tell me what happened to him in his past...I have some ideas about it, but gosh, who knows...?!?

I believe part of is experience and distractions. My boys' outdoor time is limited to our daily leashed walks. They are in tune with me, but when a distraction presents itself -- like the UPS delivery truck -- the boys lose their minds!

The boys have gotten loose a few times. They seem to only respond to fear in my voice. Like Piper, they aren't treat motivated outdoors.

Using the 25 ft leash with Piper is good. Keep practicing outdoor commands. I've noticed with my guys that they easily forget things when we haven't done them in a long time, like how to behave walking in heavy people traffic on a sidewalk.

ALL my yorkies were like that when they were outdoors. Once something caught their attention all my words fell on deaf ears.
Cody is no different, he knows many commands and tricks, in the house just the two of us, no distractions he goes through all his commands and tricks, he is a PERFECT lil boy.
Now, when we go to a pet supply store, that's a different story, he becomes deaf, does not understand english, I do not exist. I walk red faced apologizing "he's a rescue".
I take him to friends house, bragging how smart he is, how fast he learns, what a PERFECT lil boy he is, then I give him a trick command, nothing, no response, he's to busy sniffing out new surroundings, now I say, oh he's use to the throw rug I guess lol.
In the yard when he is fixated on something in the woods, and trying to rip down the fence to kill whatever he THINKS is there, I CAN catch his attention with the word TREAT.
Yorkies when they have their minds or sight on something can be very thick headed lol.
With Cody I know I MUST get him to place's with more distractions and work on his obedience commands. Not obeying safety commands can become a serious issue for me.

Training always needs to be refreshed. Razz man drop it command didn't work the other night. So now we practice again!

ONE of the MANY things I have learned on YT is "nothing in life is free" Cody has to work for his treat.Cody goes through ALL his commands and tricks every night at 8PM and gets a Cheerio oat after each command and trick. I mix them up every night lol. Works fine in the house where there are no distractions, out in public it's like he knows NOTHING, not even his NAME lol.

Piper sounds so much like Max...he used to be allowed outside but the last month he started chasing everything, especially leaves! Doesnt listen to me at all, but then his sisters don't either! All three drive me crazy..I'm the crazy lady screaming Ava get in this house, don't you make me come get you or else! Emma pick up the pace! Emmmmaaaaa get in here! Now I get to add Mmmmmaaaaaaxxxxxx listen to me and get that cute butt in the house NOW! Neighbors must love me!
But I'm a little smarter than those stubborn creatures, I've learned a trick. All three are suckers for a treat and can't pass up coming inside for that treat. Now max comes in but not as quick as when I go outside with his squeaky toy. He doesn't hear me scream but boy does he hear that squeak. He loves playing fetch so I have to throw it a few times so he remembers that squeak means mom will play with him! I think I need a couple more dogs! Then commit me please!

Your Piper's 'back story' may play a large part in the 'selective deafness' issue, but the rest may just be 'Yorkie' attitude. My kids' hearing doesn't 'always' turn off when they are outside. Many times, they are perfectly cooperative outside, but sometimes they do experience 'temporary' deafness...and sometimes, when called, their legs will suddenly 'break' and I have to go and pick them up and carry them back inside...where the legs begin working again immediately. LOL

Indeed Pipe has a will of iron; and when she is outside, doing what she wants to do there is simply nothing that will entice her (not even the offer of her favorite chicken jerky). Once she puts up that invisible Piper Force Shield, I may as well be a mime for all the affect I have!
