| Think back when your yorkie was 5 months old was he or she totally potty trained? I know they are difficult to train...is it they are stubborn, willful, or lazy? Just when I think he's got it he comes in from outside where his sister dogs went potty and I run my bath, only to find he pooped and peed right outside the bathroom door! He was just outside! Sometimes I think I need to just make him wait it out and freeze out true so he gets the job done quickly. My husband takes him our front...and he always goes but takes some time. I feel quilty so give in and for me he likes to play keep away and doesn't come always so it's out the side door to their smaller fenced area. In the big backyard he won't come in either till the girls come in, and last time drug out a dead animal from under the deck so won't be letting out there any time soon. During the day he pees always outside, it's just the pooping in the house but 75% time hits pee pad. Should I wait longer and we both freeze (in that cAse better put on shoes and a jacket..that's me not him) Am I expecting too much at 5 months? |

| I have had 4 female yorkies gotten at 8 weeks old,(not all 4 at the same time lol) now all have passed. They were fed on a schedule. At 5 months old they were 100% pad trained with NO accidents, at 5 months old they also had had ALL their shots so it was time to house break them, every morning I leash walked them at 7:30AM, even if they had already did their business I walked them anyway, they need to learn at a certain time they will go out, rain, snow, sleet, 7:30AM out we went. I came home from work at 4:15PM, I would lasso them up and at 4:30PM they were leash walked again, even if they had made on the pad, they were walked. At age 7 months old they were 100% house broken. All dogs have built in alarm clocks, they know when they will be eating, they know when they will be walked. At 10PM I took the out to the curb only for their last pee-pee for the night then it was off to bed for us. Feeding time (schedule) and consistency are the KEY WORDS for potty training out doors. At the time I had my puppies I was a renter, no back yard, so leash walking was a MUST. I am now a home owner and can see the pit falls of trying to house break puppies. There MUST be schedules for feeding and outside potty, with NO PLAYING. I now have a adopted boy, I got him when he was 2 1/2 years old, he was semi house broken, leash walked by prev. owner. Now he had a yard, no leash, the first day I took him home I took him out to the yard to do his business, all he did was run like a stallion signing "Born Free" with me giving him command words of pee-pee and poo-poo, not knowing what woods were used for this by prev. owner. When he finally peed I did the happy dance, clapped my hands, praised like crazy, made a BIG fuss and kept calling it pee-pee and pointing to where he just peed, that day after he peed he went running back to the house, now I had also changed his name from THEODORE, to much of a mouthful for me, I changed it to CODY, I only had him a few hours, so I am calling him by his new name and telling him come make poo-poo, back he comes, sniffs and poops, again, happy dance, clapping hands, making big fuss, pointing to his poop and calling it by it's name poo-poo. From that point on he made outdoors. I am lucky, he will whine when he wants to go out. I would NOT allow playing when it's potty time, when you take him out keep giving him the command words you use to pee and poo, let him know what he's out there for, you may want to use a leash so you can control NO PLAYING. Once you get the no playing concord you can stop using the leash and just use the command words for what he is outside for. My girls were very easy to pad train then house break.

| I think I had revelation today that clears up some issues. Max needs to poop on concrete or just not grass! He went out this morning and sure enough I waited him out and he went. When he gets let out in the side yard it's taller grass ( husband needs to mow their play yard) he pees there then goes to the front door. I let him out and he poops out there? Guess he needs a patio in his play yard. But makes sense why he goes in the front and inside. He must not like tickling his bum with long grass 😀. |

Is your Max possibly a 'shy' pooper? Teddy was that way. He wanted privacy. Make sure you praise profusely and reward when he gets it right. My boys are 7 years old and we still praise and reward.

YT 1000 Club Member | I trained 2 puppies at once and at 5 months they were not house broken. By 7 months they were mostly house broken but still an accident here and there. At 16 months my daughter moved out with her puppy and my puppy was fully house trained within a week or two of them being separated. Not sure why it made a difference. About the same time my daughter moved out with her puppy I also started working and maybe putting him on a schedule helped. I take him out before I leave for work. My son takes the dogs out as soon as he gets home and then I take them out again when I get home from work and again before bed. Rowan will bark at me if he needs to go out, but that is a very new thing he has started. It is nice because I have some idea of when he needs to go outside now. He didn't used to ever let me know. He only pee's 2-3 times a day though even if he is taken outside every few hours. Good luck, I know how difficult it can be to train them. On a good note, my puppy knows all kinds of little tricks and likes to show off for people, smart as can be.
