| Advice please on getting 2nd yorkie Hello from Ireland Myself and the family have decided we are ready for our 2nd yorkie. We are going to wait until after Christmas to get the new dog so I've been given the job of researching what would be best for us. Pixie is our only dog and we are so looking forward to getting another yorkie. Pixie is the absolute dream yorkie. She is 15 months old, extremely friendly and sociable. Rarely barks, non fussy eater, exceptionally smart and very loving. She is around other dogs on walks and with my parents dogs but they are very old and not really able to play with her. she loves going 1 day a week to doggy daycare and I think we would all benefit from having another yorkie in the house. I've always grown up with 2 dogs and that's what I prefer. I only work 2 short days a week, we have a lovely enclosed garden and live 10 minutes from the beach. My question is really is it a female or male dog I should go for. I've been told male yorkies are harder to train but are very loveable and that 2 females might not be the best way to go but I keep getting conflicting advice so I'm just wondering if anyone could share their experience and offer me some advice. Thanks so much! |

| Your baby is just beautiful. I can only tell you of my experience with multi dogs. I had a pack of 3 females, all 3 years apart. They were all loving girls, never a fight, growl between them. Came a time my two older girls passed away 6 months apart, the baby who was then six years old grieved their loss, she was very depressed, not the little clown she had always been. I gave her 6 months to accept to being the only child. Seven months later she was still depressed so out I went in search for a buddy for her. And I did find the perfect girl for her. My 6 yo it was LOVE at first sight, she bonded with this puppy on day one. I called them roadway lol, where ever one was the other was right behind her lol. My six yo weighed 9lbs, the baby as an adult was 17 Lbs and very gentle with my older one. They played and wrestled all the time. I would say it really depends on the dogs personalities. I TRAINED all my dogs to be loving and they all were very socialized with ALL animals, one of my older girls would play for hours with my nieces ferret lol. Some ppl say get the opposite sex when getting a second dog. I had all GIRLS and never had any issues with them. Good luck in your decision.

| We had our girl first and got a darling little boy last may. just love the boy / girl thing! Sounds like your girl is so sweet. My tiny gal is our darling (and not a barker either) but she likes being the center of attention! So in our search, we wanted a boy who was calm and not in need of being the star lol. It has worked out beautifully and they are just so much fun!! |

| Oh and with the females, it just depends From real life friends who are trainers and dog walkers, I think two females can be trickier then female/male but I often see on this board, people do it without issue. Best of luck in your search! |

| Your girl is a beauty! Note I'm only speaking from my experience as I have never had 2females. My male came first and then the female. There is 4months between them. They get along great. She is dominant-he just says, yes dear. She takes care of him. When their dinner is put down she checks to see he has some in his bowl before she eats. They romp and play like 2little kids.

| Thanks for your advice. I had got Pixie for my daughter so I asked my son the other day what he'd like and he said he'd love a boy dog so I think we will go with the boy dog. I just feel lately that my dog is a bit mopey going around. She gets walked all the time and plenty of time on the beach and as I only work 2 short days a week she's never on her own but she's much happier when she's in my mam and dads house who have 3 old cavaliers and even though they are too old to play with her she seems to be much more at ease in the company of people and dogs rather than just people. Sometimes when i have things to do like housework she just sits on the bottom of the stairs looking very sad. Maybe Im just over sensitive but I just think she's really missing out on having a 2nd dog in the home and I have always had 2 or more dogs so I can't wait for the New Year so we can get our new addition! |
