| Need recommendations for staircase gate! We need to buy a staircase gate for our new house. We have never needed one before, so I'm afraid to buy one off of amazon and then the slots be too wide...I don't want her trying to stick her head through the rails and get stuck! Leave your personal anecdotes/advice on stair gates/baby gates below please

| I got a cheap baby gate like below: Amazon I used plastic ties to secure it to one of columns on one end and installed a small hook on the other to "lock" it in place. (We had stairs that didn't have any walls on either end) Now that we moved, I'm using the one below. More expensive but works better b/c I can modify the shape/size to my needs if necessary. I got the 76" but you can add/take away a panel. Amazon Zoey's about 5.5 lbs and we haven't had any issues with her getting stuck. Okay.. I measured FOR YOU! The space between the bars are about 2.625". I measured Zoey's head it was bit less than 3" but definitely not smaller than 2.625. |

| Congratulations on your new home! Will the gate be at the top or bottom of the stairs? Do you currently use gates anywhere in your house? We have the expandable baby gates, the kind in Magnus' first link, that keep the boys in the back of the house. I have to caution you if you are not accustomed to gates: you wouldn't believe how easy it is to forget they are there and fall over them (or maybe it is just me, lol). I was carrying laundry and moving fast once, fell right over the gate. Luckily the laundry cushioned my fall. Do you want to be able to step over it or open it like a gate? All of the ones that open that I have seen have the bars fairly wide apart for small dogs.

| i bought two beautiful white metal gates n thought the bars were so close together - was the tightest looking one without doing mesh I could find. Eek. Not so much. She was squeezing through so I would reco the baby gates that look like mesh if your little one is small. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | We use something that is uber cheap, but looks clean/decent. It's just a $8 wire shelf piece that one would use in a closet...it's super light weight, easy for humans to step over, but keeps the doggies at bay. You can get them to be 12 in high or 16 in high...the 12 in work for us fine. You can cut them to correct length yourself using a bolt cutter, or, Home Depot can cut them for you. You can spray paint them any color to blend in w/ decor. Like this: ClosetMaid SuperSlide 72 in. x 12 in. Ventilated Wire Shelf-4717 - The Home Depot

Love this idea! I can think of several ways to modify it to make it expandable, adjustable, etc. I've been wanting to replace the gate from my first link so I think I might give this a try myself! Omgosh... I'll get to use the new tools I bought! So excited!!!!!!!!! | |
