Think Yorkie Pup triggered my Asthma, Help!!!

Hello everyone, I'm new to this board and I would like some help if possible. So I have allergies and asthma, and my two children have allergies too. I've been reading online Yorkies are good for people with asthma and allergies suffers. So I went to my friend's house a month ago to see her yorkie to see if her dog would trigger my asthma. I was there for the whole day and I was fine. Her yorkie is 3 yrs old. I was very happy and I started looking for a yorkie to adopt. So yesterday I went to see some Yorkie pups. they are 8 weeks old. I could tell you I'm so in love with the puppies. I held a few of them on my chest, sand took some pictures with the pups and some videos too. Ok, here is the problem, I was there at their house for maybe 45 mins. While I was there, I was ok, but when I left my chest was started hurting and I had a little shortness of breath. I found this person on Craigslist, he is asking for $500 and I really want this pup, the problem is our family has had a few breeds already, we have had a beagle, pit bull, and goldendoodle, we have spent over $1,000 on these dogs and had to give all of them away, which was very heart breaking for me because I really love animals and I'm freaking allergic to everything. I do know that I'm allergic to dog saliva too. I'm very confused because when I was around my friend's dog, I was fine, but for some reason this pup may have triggered my asthma, and I'm really worried. If indeed i buy this Yorkie, I don't think they will give me the money back. I need help please, they will hold the puppy for me until Friday.

As much as I hate to say this - you did have an allergic response to this puppy. If you know already you are allergic to dog saliva - I am so sorry but likely owning a canine is not in your and the dogs best interest. Perhaps you can volunteer at a shelter - or offer to dog sit every now and again.

The other option is to see your doctor to try to desensitize yourself and your children to dog saliva and dander....

While people with allergies tend to tolerate the Yorkshire Terrier very well, a reaction can vary from one dog to another. My sister is allergic but reacts to some of my dogs but not others. If you have any doubt, please don't take a puppy home.

Just a shot in the dark, but perhaps the reason that the pups set off your allergies is because you allergic to their saliva, mama's clean their babies and babies are always licking each other, whereas your friends yorkie might not have been covered in kisses.
But if you're allergic to their saliva, I would think it's not in the cards to get a dog at all. It just makes it all the more heartbreaking if you have to get rid of it not only for you but for the pup as well.

Is it possible that something at their home upset your asthma? I know that my son can not be around smokers at all or his asthma is terrible so any friends houses he wants to go to I have to see if they smoke there because he can't go play there if they do.

Was there anything else there that might have triggered this? Have you talked to your doctor about getting a dog? I know nothing about being allergic to dog saliva, so I can't offer many suggestions on that.

Good luck if you decide to get the puppy. I would have a back up plan in case you are allergic. It could be that once the puppy get a little older and you are washing it in what you are not allergic to and it has been in your home that you won't have any reactions to it, but it is hard to say for sure. If you had a family member willing to take the puppy if it doesn't work out or something so you would know it has a good home.

If you were in a home that had anumber of pups there could have been a number of environmental issues you were exposed to.

Talk with your allergist.
