| I just noticed a black patch on saddle about 1/2" in diameter My yorkie pup is about 18 weeks old and blowing her coat. I just noticed today a small black patch of short black hairs and skin in that area is slightly darker than on other areas of her saddle. Anyone have any insights into what is this and the cause? Will the patch grow in size and be permenant with no hair that won't grow like the rest of her coat? Is she stressed or a sign of health issues? I've attached couple photos. *worried* |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | So this is just short/blunt black hairs or is that a large black patch of skin? If skin, then I'd have it checked by a vet. If they're just short hairs, I can't think of why....? Odd...

| Thanks for replying. I looked at it closer and it looks like a patch of darker short hairs that are bunched rather than sparse like the rest of her coat. Underneath all that bunched up black/short hair, her skin (no raise) is just a tad darker compare to rest of skin. I measured it- the spot is about an inch in diameter (bigger than we initially thought). I wonder if this is some sort of birthmark or weird patch of hair that will eventually grow out as her puppy hair blows coat. |

| I would guess birthmark. Run it by your vet when you are in.

| She had rabies and second set of puppy shots last Saturday (I don't recall where on her body)- I wonder if this is just coincidence? I've read several articles about skin irritation. Can I rule out Alopecia X since the skin underneath is not horrible darker? If this is infact a birthmark, will it eventually grow/spread? Will new/normal hair grow out eventually? Her coat was getting so pretty before this happened so I'm a bit sad. Anyone have this experience they want to share? There's nothing alarming on that area (no scabs, flake, redness). She's perfectly health otherwise. |
