| New Yorkie Owners Good Evening, My Wife and I became parents of a 7 year old Yorkie today. He was given to us by an owner who had him for 5 years. We were in the market to buy but the owner insisted on giving him away. When we picked him up today, he was fine. He was excited. We didn't think it would be a good idea to change is eating schedule or the type of food he eats so we didn't change either. However, we did give him some little chicken flavored Canine Carryout as a treat. We brought him home and he was fine.. Then he went for a ride with me to handle some business. He was never in the car for more than 30 minutes at a time. Although the total time he spent in the car all together between stops was about an hour or so. During the last trip home, he vomited in 4 places in the car and he has not moved since I brought him in. He has laid in one spot. He even used the rest room #1 and #2 and just laid there in it. He didn't get up to use it. All and all he has laid in the same spot for about 2 hours and will not stand on his own. I need help! If there was a 911 Vet I would call but there isn't one in my area that I know of. Can anyone give insight? |

| Sorry your little guy is sick. This sounds very serious and he needs to see a vet right away. Losing bowel and bladder control and not being able to stand is very concerning.

Sounds to me like he might have gotten car sick. There is no vet in your area??? I would definitely try to find a vet to take him to. Good luck with him. Maybe someone else here can help you out more.

| Wow! How scary! Have you called the previous owner to see if he has ever had this happen before? I learned the hard way that little ones can dehydrate very quickly. Do the vets have an emergency number you can call? Have you tried giving him some water with sugar in it? Please keep us updated. Will be praying everything turns out ok.

| Unfortunately we lost little Baxter about 2 hours ago. We didn't have time to do too many remedies. Yes we did call the previous owner and the emergency number for the Vet and got the same answer regarding Sugar Shock - By the time we got that information and tried it, his little jaws were locked tight and it wasn't long before he took a very deep breath and passed away right in front of us. Tough, Long, Night.... |

| Yes it was sad. Broke our hearts. We were so ready to be great parents to the little guy. Miss him already. Have to take a little while to deal with this but we really want us a little Yorkie. |

| sorry for your loss, but something fishy is going on. How well do you know the previous owners? Why did they give Baxter up? I have a 5 year old yorkie mix and have had 4 other yorkies, mature yorkies that are healthy or even reasonably healthy do not go into "sugar shock" or dehydration in just an hour or two. Lola can go for hours without drinking or eating, and is just fine. If your dog could not handle an hour or so without water something else was definitely going on.

| I am posting again because I started thinking that you and you wife might be feeling like you did something wrong. I seriously doubt that would be the case, many dogs and several in bad health are picked up by rescue groups and driven on long trips to a foster home or a vet, many are given treats and so forth and they survive. A 7 year old dog can survive a few hours or more without water or food and a few new treats, and definitely a bout of car sickness, and if this dog was prone to car sickness did the owner tell you that, surely they would have known. I could be wrong but my gut says this dog was sick and the owners did not bother to find out what was wrong or they knew but did not want to spend the money to treat him. My heart goes out to you because you opened your home up to an older yorkie where many would not.

| this is a good example on why to stay away from free giveaway yorkies, especially those listed on places like Craig's List. If I was going to take in a new yorkie it would have to be from either someone I knew well, someone that a vet vouched for or a reputable rescue group, and I would want vet current vet records. I know it is a wonderful gesture to take someone else's pup but unless you are prepared financially and emotionally for what might come your way you are taking on quite a risk.
