| New puppy but didnt research sellers first Hi everyone! Just bought new puppy for a very large amount of money. After getting him home I found your site but hadnt registered yet and was reading your forums from years ago and found numerous people who had dealings with my seller and said to stay away from her. I didnt realize the registration paper she gave me was ACA instead of AKC and after reading what ACA was I am so shook up I dont know what to do. He has to go to the vets before 48 hrs but she did tell me if I thought I didnt want this dog I could bring him back the next day. Now I know from your forums she is not telling the truth. I did get a contract stating if vet found something wrong I can take him back within 48 hrs. Anyway I look at it I feel like I got scammed. We are older, retired people who have had dogs before and I admitt I am embarrased this happened to us. He is a cute, fiesty puppy but now Im totally worried that this puppy will be a sickly dog like the ones that reported on your forums about their sickly dogs from this seller. I feel very mad about all this but than I also feel that if I take him back that I will be literally abandoning him. Please any advice would be appreciated but please go easy on me. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT . Congrats on your new little one! I'm sorry about your concerns with the breeder - believe me, many of us have been in your shoes too, so you're not alone. There are SO many unscrupulous breeders out there. In her past pups where there are "sickly pups", what was wrong w/ them? Even though she did have some sickly pups, your little one may be perfectly healthy - so I'd have the vet check him out thoroughly (check the knees!).

| Have you taken him to the vet yet? If not, take a deep breath and wait to see what the vet says. If the vet says everything is okay and you decide to keep him, get pet insurance. Pet insurance is good to have anyway regardless if your pup comes from a bad breeder or a good breeder. Pet insurance can alleviate some of the worry associated with cost. |

| Just go online and Google pet insurance. You can comparison shop before you buy. I have insurance with PetPartners or PetPlan -can't remember and they pay within one month. I also had Trupanion and they were good too. There is VIP pet insurance too. Good luck.

| Wili's mom What I meant by sickly pups was that people from this forum from years back had wrote in that their dogs after being bought grom this lady got very sick. Like I just replied Im going to the vet today. I will do as suggested and take a deep breath over all this. Last night I was up all night thinking that so many people look at you strange of why you bought a pup instead of adopting which I have adopted in the past and I was questioning myself all night. I was looking for a very small yorkie and I did investigate quite a few adoption places and at this time in my area they didnt have any and I certainly wasnt going to go out of state to adopt. So many at the adoption places had small dogs but every time I looked at a different breed I was told they were getting treated for positive heartworm . I have never seen so many foster dogs that are positive. Anyway. Thank you all for letting me vent!! |

| There are tons of member on here that have pet insurance. I personally have Healthy Paws. You can also do a google search. I used reviews, comparisons and the opinions of the members here to help with my decision. In the end I went with healthy paws because they checked off all of my criteria. |

| As for giving him back if he is not in good health, I would weigh the severity of the illness with my financial ability to take care of him. If I couldn't take care of his illnesses financially, I would probably find the little guy a home with someone who could. I probably would not return him to the breeder. If she has such a bad reputation, I wouldn't be surprised if she put him down even if the illness is manageable. But then again, I am sucker for these little guys (all animals not just yorkies) and I would probably keep him anyway. |

Yorkie Yakker | Definitely have a very thorough vet check asap, make sure vet knows your concerns about breeder. But if it were me I'd sign up immediately with pet insurance. Each company is very specific and pre-existing conditions will be a problem, going to a pup ER you will probably have to pay up front but that insurance can really help out! You can always cancel insurance, should you decide not to keep the pup. Tho that would be a difficult decision knowing what you evidently know about the breeder. Good luck and I hope your baby is healthy |

| I hope all goes well at the vet! If he gets a clear bill then like others said I would invest in pet insurance as some genetic problems can show up later in life.

| FYI - If you are thinking at all about keeping the puppy, I would sign up online for pet insurance BEFORE you take your puppy to the vet for its first visit. If anything at all is found and recorded on your puppy's medical chart, it will be deemed pre-existing and therefore will not be covered under the pet insurance policy.

| I would just get pet insurance that covers genetic issues and chalk it up to a lesson learned. A lot of us have done it. I wouldn't take him back at this point just get the pet insurance and love him.

| Pup I feel for you having dealt unknowingly with a breeder who is not the best. Good that you are taking him to the vet ASAP. I agree with others here that without a good health contract to cover possible health issues, it would be very wise to get insurance. It was suggested that you get insurance before the first vet visit. But I think that if the dog gets sick, the insurance company requests a vet history before they cover anything. As you have to get the exam in 48 hours, any health issues will be on record anyway. Praying he is healthy and many of your fears will be allayed. There is much info on the internet re insurance and it is quite a task to make apples to apples comparisons. One has to carefully consider the coverage, conditions and small print! I did much research and decided on Trupanion and have been very happy with the coverage and service. I have zero deductible and they pay 90% of covered costs. The only issue with Trupanion is that the deductible is for each illness rather than per year. As I have 0 deductible I don't care. They also do not increase premiums with age. Any increases are only for relative vet costs in a given area. I have only had one increase in five years. The other good insurer I have heard is Healthy Paws. The coverage is similar to Trupanion but they only charge the deductible per year. . But they do increase premiums with age I hear. These insurers are for accidents or illness and do not cover vet visits or routine things like flea meds etc., but there are some companies that do cover such things. Good luck at the vet and hope your baby is healthy and that you will enjoy her for a very long time. |
