| Yorkies and the Heat It's getting hotter! In nyc it's hovering between 80 and 90 F! This is my first small dog and I know she is not made to handle the heat. But how much is too much? I know she is very frustrated not getting to go to the park and on her long daily walks (I still take her out, but for much shorter periods- it's been 80 even at night), being a terrier in a small apartment with energy to burn. Tips and tricks? Advise? Has anyone bought a cooling jacket for their dog? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Ugh, it's HOT here too, in the desert. In the 100's. The test for paws is to put your own hand or foot on the pavement...if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them too. If you want them to walk on the heated surface for a short period, then you could get some dog boots or whatnot to protect the paws. I just always do walks in the early mornings this time of year. I have not tried a cooling jacket but imagine they'd provide some good relief. What about those newer "cooling towels" too...?

| I say on particularly hot days, just take her out when the sun goes down perhaps or early in the a.m. Avoid peak heat hours in the middle of the day. if its a must, you may want to carry her most of the way and find a shady area for her to run about but keep her hydrated and make her take breaks. My pup goes out, does his business then he is dragging me into the house to get some ac. |

We do the same -- our outings are early in the morning and late evening. Around August, we have to wait until 9 pm to go to our walking park.

| When my dogs go out twice a day, for shorter and shorter periods of time as summer smothers us...everyone goes out 8am - 12 noon....that is with kiddie pools and water sprinklers and drinking water accessable every instant....and between 11am and 12 noon, if anyone has avoided a water feature, I snatch them up and soak them down and that last hour, they are running around sopping wet, but cool! Then we all go inside to the a/c and naps until 4pm. At 4pm, we start late afternoon yard time, again pools and sprinklers going, and when they first go out, each one is dunked in water, then turned loose to run like maniacs around the yard, cool! I make sure everyone stays wet and hydrated the entire time we are outside in this Texas heat, already 90* -100*!! I slack off on dipping into pools and water around 6pm, and then we are all ready to hit the a/c again around 8pm.....we are, in fact, bringing the last of the group into the house for the evening as we speak! We will be all settled in for the evening, with dinner served, and TV watching in order, then crated and lights out for the night at 10pm! |

| I'm with Wylie's Mom, if it's too hot for you, it's to hot for them, (particularly if they are indoor dogs since their paws are not adapted enough to the sudden temp change). We usually take our furbabies out either really early or late in the afternoon. If we take them in the hotter times, it's on the grass/ground and not cement.

| Piper loves going for walks (i.e. fast, little terrier-trots) even when it's hot. However, she lets me know we're done when she dramatically drops to the ground (read: shady, cool, often just watered, grass), stretching out and/or flipping on her side. 'Course as soon as I say, "C'mon, let's go home.." Piper is off at her usual time's a-wasting trot. I keep our warm-weather walks confined to our neighborhood so we're never more than a few blocks from home. Neither Pipe' nor I are fans of hot summer weather! |

| Our Zeus HATES the heat and I do as well. Unfortunately, we live in Muggy Mississippi where you can cut humidity with a knife. It has been unbearable already -- only going down to about 78 at night. Zeus doesn't even want to go outside. He plays hide-and-go-seek with my 14 year old inside for his exercise. It's his favorite game -- only he always has to be the seeker! |

| Some days we're not able to get out either if it's too hot. We try go early in the day, or after the sun goes down. If you like to walk when it's warm, you may want to try putting your pup in a stroller. You would be able to let her out to go potty and she could enjoy the outdoors too.

| We went to a "woof-fest" a few weeks ago and it was hot. Bbear being more black than silver and tan didn't enjoy it much. He hid under every vendor table. It was even too hot to carry him. They had doggie pools and water stations. I put him into a pool and he wasn't having any of it. At 10 months I still hope I can get him use to playing in the water. We don't get as hot as Phoenix but the low 100s is usual for us during our worst weather. |
