Hi my yorkie has really dry skin and flakes. Sometimes it is scabby I tried changing her food to royal canian. Can anyone help

I believe there was a thread about this long ago... but... Royal Canian is known to give lots of dogs dry flaky skin so change that first. I also add salmon oil into my dogs food which helps. Also, change the shampoo you use to something more natural and have tea tree oil to sooth the skin. It also could be a fungus infection such as ring worms. I took my dog to the dog park and he ended up catching ring worms there and had flaky skin so I bought lotrimin ac and applied it to the are for 2 weeks as well as took him to the vet for some allergy/antibiotics shots.

Just to add.. some dogs are allergic to grass... is your yorkie itching and sneezing too? If so, avoid grass for now and see if that improves. It is allergy season after all.

Our older Yorkie had dry skin-to the point of hot spots from him chewing at it...we used to put tea tree oil on the spots...the taste would keep him from gnawing at it, its a natural anti bacterial, and it would clear up, but its seasonal...so far so good on the new guy...

There's no way we could know what food to recommend to feed your dog. There are lots of quality foods out there. It could be seasonal allergies, food allergies, and what I discovered with my dog was she was sensitive to hard water. We have a soft water system in the house and she scratches 99% less than before.

If it's scabby, then there is definitely something going on here like allergies. Scabs usually mean there is an infection, called pyoderma in dogs -- and it needs to be treated w/ Simplicef for 30 days. The longer you let it go untreated, usually the worse and more profuse it will get.
