Hi ...I am new to this site..just wondering who else has a yorkie with trachea
collapse and what treatment works or doesn't work. My vet says my yorkie has a mild to medium trachea collapse and is having him try Cerenia.

Cerenia for a collapsed trachea makes no sense to me. I have a dog with a profound collapsed trachea and he takes Hycodan twice a day. Maybe your vet needs to use the appropriate drugs for CT. Maybe you misunderstood the vet?

Actually Cerenia does help with a mild to medium collapse and I would say at this point your Vet is not prescribing Hycodan because he/she does not feel it is bad enough for Hycodan.
the way Cerenia works is that it tells the brain not to cough. My 12 year old Yorkie has enough of a collapse that I have to give him Hycodan when he has coughing that starts up and continues. I give Cerenia as well sometimes to help stop the coughing. Hycodan is a narcotic cough suppressant.
There is another thing that often works for a collapsing trachea. The injectible drug Adequan for knee cartilage also seems to strengthen somewhat the trachea. There are many Vets that know about this as mine does too. Same protocol as is used for knees, amount appropriate for weight given once a week for 8 weeks then once every 3 to 4 weeks. It does not help in all collapsing trachea issues but worth a try. Adequan is not an expensive drug.

I should mention if Cerenia is not giving much cough control Hycodan may be the next step, ask your Vet.

My moms yorkie takes hydrocodone for his CT and it works great!

If a dog needs a cough suppressant for a collapsing trachea, then why not use the more effective drugs that can be used as needed like Hycodan. If cerenia is needed to stop a cough, then the dog has enough of a CT issue to warrant a real medication for the problem like hycodan, bronchodilators, etc etc.

As for adequan, I love that stuff. We did not give it as the protocol that you mentioned. We gave it twice a week for a month. But, we did not use it for collapsing trachea. We used it for a luxating patella flare and then again tried it for a biceps tendonitis. It didn't do anything for my dog's cough due to a collapsed trachea. My dog is about to turn 15, tracheal collapse is profound at thoracic inlet.

Thanks for the responses..since my yorkie has a mild case of TC my vet says to try it to see if it helps..Cerenia was found to work well with some dogs and is the safest with little or no side effects...it has been found to work as a anti-inflammatory in the trachea ...Cerenia was used for vomiting and for motion sickness but it being used for other ailments in dogs and cats...I will give it a try for awhile if no good results occur then we will try other drugs..but Narcotics will be the last thing we will use....I also read that Glyco FLex may help with strengthening cartilage in the the trachea as well with all over the body.

How can you tell the difference between mild and not mild. Does it go by how much the trachea is collapses on the test or how often they have the symptoms? My dog makes a hack noise at least a few times a day since I got him at 4 months and he is now 1. Not a full blown cough just like the chi does in the video. Should he be treated?

If you're using a collar, then stop using it. Use a body harness instead. That's the #1 reason for collapse trachea. Once you use the harness it'll relieve the tension. When walking your dog don't let him/her pull on leash. So you will need to teach him/her to walk nicely on the leash with no tension.

I thought you and your vet came to the conclusion that it was aide reflux?

Not exactly the collar can cause the trachea to collapse but generally its weak cartilage that is the big issues.

Very true, but using a collar on a dog that has weak cartilage will only make it worse. Since no one mentioned a body harness, and without information, I thought I'd throw it out there just in case.

Love to Dream. Now she is saying it is a combination of both!! She said not to take expensive tests now where as it is not so bad.

oh ok wouldn't it be nice if they could just talk to us and tell us whats going on instead of having to guess?

Lovetodream. I have had dogs for many years and I really don't think they know half the time. I think they guess. If there is not a test to say okay yes this is definately what it is than they guess!! I think that happens in people to. I guess only time will tell
