| Reminder!! I wanted to post a reminder to make sure your babies are always wearing collars and tags and if you are stubborn about not having a collar and tags on them make sure they are microchipped no ifs and or butts about it. Also if they are blind, old and or have other health issues please make sure you know where they are at all times and don't let them out by themselves or leave other non careful people in charge or where they can let your dog out. Today when me and my mom were on our way to one of my doctors appointments we drove past a very tiny dog that I would be surprised if she was 5 pounds and we stopped and turned around and my mom first went to try and get her but she walked away so I came over in the middle of the road where she now was and I could tell by looking at her eyes she either could not see or could not see very well. Anyway she came close to me so I stuck my hand out and let her sniff it and after that knowing I saw cars in the distance picked her up. I was lucky she was very sweet and did not bite me but a bite is still better then her getting hit or even running off. I handed her to my mom so I could look for a collar. She had a sweater on but no collar. There was a house across the road near where we found her so we knocked but no answer so we were going to take her to our vet which is one of the local vets and scan her for a chip and let them make sure she was ok. Well after we turned around in ther driveway and were about to leave a truck pulled up so my mom took her to ask the people in the truck if she was theirs. She was, she's 16, blind, mostly deaf and diabetic. They didn't even know she was out but the women was near tears. I'm just so glad it worked out how it did that she did not get hit, that we were the ones who found her and that we found her owners easily. Please please make sure your dogs have some kind of ID. Don't wait if they don't either go out and either get one or microchip them. Mine wears a collar and tags all the time and she is seriously never left alone.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Always such a great reminder for those who don't do this yet, or at all times! Mine are chipped and wear tags at all times too. On their tags, I also have "needs medication" so that people will think they are sickly and hopefully won't be as tempted to keep them. Bless your heart for picking up that poor little girl, btw - thank God you were able to!!!

| so glad you picked her up, you have good advice and I would like to take it a step further. Make sure you update tag info, several times I have picked up dogs and the number on the collar was old or they got rid of their land line in favor of a cell but never changed the number. Also a chip is great but does not replaces the collar many people that find a dog will think to have it checked for a chip or will take days to do it. Also when you travel get a tag with the contact number of the person taking care of your dog. My sister went on vacation out of the country once and her dog got out on my parents, the only number on the tag was her home phone so the person that found the dog kept calling there and got no answer, the dog's micro chip had my parents number as a back up contact but the person that found her had her 4 days and never had her scanned.

| I have definitely learned that lesson and for me it was happy ending. A few years ago Brandi (RIP) got out the house without me knowing. Fortunately for me, she didn't stray too far away from the house but Brandi knew how to get back home. All I had to do as call her name and she came running. That happened twice. I was also fortunate in that I live on a cul de sac and virtually no traffic. All of my neighbors knew Brandi and had they seen her would of been knocking on my door. Although she had a microchip she didn't have her tags on. Now my current Yorkie keeps her tags on 24 hours and she is also microchip. I believe both are necessary because non-pet owners just may not know about microchips and will not go to the vet to get it scan. I also make sure they know how to get home from short distances. I walked Brandi (and Dutch) everyday an a variety of different directions. It had gotten to the point where Brandi would lead me back to the house (on leash of course). I would just let her guide me back home. I believe that's why when she got out she didn't go very far. I lived in a neighborhood that had sidewalks. When we needed to cross the street. I made Brandi stop and not move unless I moved. I guess I tried to teach her survival skills in the event she did get out without me knowing. Although i was extremely diligent, my little one manage to slip out the house without me knowing. Short of having a GPS on them, teaching them little things like not crossing the street or how to find their way home from short distances might save their lives. |

| Great reminder! So happy you saved that dog Taylor. I've had mixed feelings about collars and tags in the past, worried that they'd get caught on something. Years ago my mini schnauzer's s-hook on her tag got caught on a blanket and she was tangled on my bed for a while before I found her. If she jumped, she would have hung herself. However, I realize the risk of having ID on the pups, especially Tiki who darts and runs if given a chance. She even found a way to climb through bushes hanging off a cliff over the ocean to get into my neighbors yard (chasing a cat), and that opens up to a busy road. I got her a thin collar with the slide through ID tag, so it is inline and not hanging. Previous to that I had the collar that has name and number embroidered on it. I like both of these much better than hanging clanging tags.
