Default Emotional roller coaster

I"ll try to keep it short but here is my story. I had my last yorkie for 16 years. Next month will be 3 years since she's been gone. It took over 2 1/2 years to finally decide to get another yorkie. I found a reputable breeder and piked up my baby girl, Bijou at 10 weeks old. She was a very finicky eater and slept way too much. I felt in my heart something was wrong. One night shortly after eating dinner she began to act strangely, pacing, not able to get comfortable, and unsteady so I took her to the pet emergency hospital. Once there her behavior became even more strange. Her muzzle was soaking wet like I had dipped her face in. A bowl of water and she was biting her pet carrier and locking on to it and would not let go. They hydrated her and gave her an anti-nausea and I took her home. She paced for several more hours. She seemed like she was in a trance. Like she didn't even recognize me. The next morning she seemed like herself but I contacted the breeder because I never wanted to witness this puppy suffer like this again. After all the research I had done I felt she had a liver shunt. The breeder took her back but I cried for days. She kept me abreast of her status daily and seemed to be ok. She asked if I would be interested in watching her for 3 weeks while she went out of town. He husband would be there but working during the day and the puppy would be let out once a day by her her son. There are two other adult yorkies there. I decided that I loved her so much that I didn't want her to have a medical emergency and no one there to help her, not to mention stressing out the other two dogs, so I agreed to watch her. She seemed like a different puppy playful and not sleepy (lethargic-like). She said we could discuss if I wanted to keep her when she got back. Well, I have had to take her to the vet two times since. One foe UTI almost unheard of in puppy so young but common in liver problems and once for lethargy again. She had a protein C 87% anf her Alk Phosphatase went from 391 in Nov and now in Dec 1100. They also did a Addison's on Christmas Eve. This puppy whom I love dearly is is breaking my heart. They are thing MVD. I am worried about her having so many symptoms and only 21 weeks old. Advice please.

So sorry you're going thru all of this, how stressful! Emotional roller coaster is right.

If you really love this puppy, I'd be negotiating w/ the breeder to pay for a correct diagnosis as to what's wrong. This pup will need further testing, and even possibly a biopsy of her liver if they suspect MVD.

I am sorry you are in this heartbreaking situation. I agree with Ann about negotiating with the breeder to cover the cost of vet care. There are many dogs here with MVD and it can be managed successfully, but it is a big commitment.

Best wishes for you and your puppy. Keep us posted.

Default dog

It is very tough when our Yorkies are sick. My Spud is having a bout of pancreatitis and I have to go to the vet. I have been so up and down over this. I can imagine you feel the same way too. I must remember that God is in control of life and in His hands are the lives of all of us and our precious pets. I pray for peace amid this storm in my life and for you too. The love of a dog is worth every bit of what we go through, so we do our best and pray for good health to return.

I feel like the breeder manipulated you by asking you to watch the puppy while she's gone. You returned this puppy for a reason.

I would walk away. You are entitled to a healthy puppy.

I know how hard it is, when you've suffered the loss of a dearly loved dog, and finally come around to opening your heart to another. I went three years without a dog after my Chelsea died, convinced I could never love another dog as I did her. To finally get to that place where you are open to another furry friend and experience the difficulties you have with this puppy, is heartbreaking. But in your best interest, I would make the break, walk away and look elsewhere.

I think that you are in a very hard place. My heart goes out to you. But something is seriously wrong with this puppy. And this you know in your heart to be true. Btw have they done a BATS on her? That is a special blood test - while not definitive for Liver Shunt it can point the way forward for more testing.

I would say that you make sure this breeder re-imburses you for the vet costs you have incurred, and as much as it pains me to say this, step away from owning this puppy/

You have gotten a mini preview of owning a dog with serious health concerns .

If you do go ahead and decide to bring this wee one into your life, be prepared for some major vet bills. Liver Shunt surgery maybe as high as $3000 or more, and that does not include all the pre testing that is involved.
You need to go into owning this dog with your eyes wide open.......

what-ever your decision is, we here on YorkieTalk will help you as best we can!

Thank you all for your input. It helps to know people who love their animals as much as I do care.

Default Still crying

Well I am bringing Bijou back to the breeder tomorrow evening. She had another incident last night. She seemed to be having very mild HE symptoms. She had a great morning so it caught me by surprise. She had been great for the first 3 weeks of December then since Dec 24th she has not been well. I did take her for the bile acid test this morning and should have the results by Wednesday because I want the breeder to have as much info as possible to take the best care of her. I am not sure why this beautiful little yorkie came into my life but I love her so much and can't stand the thought of not seeing her again. The breeder has been great and I know she will take good care of her for as long as she can and that helps a little but I keep hoping that I will wake up soon and this nightmare will be over.

Just because this puppy isn't the right one for you, doesn't mean that another isn 't. You really deserve a healthy puppy.

I'm sincerely hoping one comes into your life soon and heals your heartache.

Default xdog

I have a friend who rescues yorkies. She says watch out for people who breed for money not quality of the dog. This puppy will be in the vet alot. You decide if you can afford her care. Sounds like breeder ripped you off and sold you a sick dog. She stands responsible .

I am so so sorry you and this pup are going through this. I can't even imagine how you must be feeling about all of this. Having to send one away after you've gotten so attached and then to wonder of it's fate. All just too much to handle. I'm really hoping that the breeder takes this baby back into her home and gives it the love and care that it deserves. I also am praying that this baby never suffers. Bless you for trying.
