|  Swimming Yorkie We have an above ground pool in our yard and every time I get in it Sophie has a fit to get in. We tried to buy her a life vest but the xx-small was too small and the x-small was too big she is 10 months and 4.12 lbs We decided to try it without a vest and just be close to her. Well we put her on our float and the next thing we know she has jumped in the water and went under a good way.  I was having a heart attack but she just swam back to the top. She did not seem scared but I was scared enough for the both of us. No more swimming Yorkie puppy. I do not know enough to know if this can be harmful to her so we will not try that again. |

| some years back I had 3 yorkies, they all LOVED swimming, they had no life jackets on, but I did keep their harness on them and used a retractable leash. I took them to a lake every week end, if I didn't keep the retractable leash they would have swam to the other side (it was not a LARGE lake) one of them had to carry her Frisbee with her ALL THE TIME, so she would swim holding that frisbee up out of the water, she was just the cutest lil thing. When not at the lake I had a very big kiddie pool for them, the water was 2 feet high, just enough for them to paddle around in, they would have stayed in that pool all day if I allowed them. If she didn't scare herself, don't you scare her, take her on the float with you, keep her harness on her and use a retractable leash, if she wants to jump in, let her, she already knows what she's in for if she jumps. If it looks like she wants to go in you can help her by putting her in rather then her jumping and going under the water, you'll have the retractable leash to help guide her back to the float. Encourage don't discourage her.When started young, yorkies enjoy swimming. Good luck.

| Why no more swimming? She sounds like she was enthusiastic about it!! Swimming is an amazing form of exercise for dogs... my Jackson LOOVESS to swim. | Blazer loves to swim! I was really nervous the first time I let him, but he LOVED it! No life jacket needed. |

| My first Yorkie, Megan, wanted to be with me so bad that she jumped off the steps into the lake, if I hadn't seen the jump myself I would never have believed she could jump that high or far. Megan had a lot of health issues and she was around 3.4lbs. Gina has a life jacket I got from petsmart, it might be in my gallery I'm not sure, but it fits her perfectly and she is 4.2lbs. Sounds like yours loved the water, and as long as you are close and paying attention I'd let her keep swimming. Cheers Quad & Gina

| Gracie Ruth loves to go swimming!! Her first BFF was a duck and I think he convinced her she was one too.  She loves playing in the sprinkler  And she loves going swimming  Just don't put her in the sink with warm, sudsy water and gently massage her...she hates baths.

| Thanks everyone! I feel so much better now that I know it is not a bad thing to let her go swimming. The funny thing was that when she came up from the water she did not cough up water or sneeze or anything. It was like she held her breath. She was a natural swimmer. I think after every ones replies I will put her back in the pool. |

| As long as you know how to properly do CPR on a small dog and stay near her in the pool should she get in trouble, she should be fine for swimming, now that you know she can. The majority of dogs automatically how to swim and just as soon as they are strong enough, seem to be able to hold their breath underwater and automatically know how to propel themselves through the water while keeping their head above the water level w/out any lessons. Those not fearful in the water seem to have a ball swimming.
