New info I learned from I'd like to share

HI All!!

So I took Zoe to the vet yesterday and I found out quite a few things I did not know to do before. My pup is months old and just got a second round of vaccinations.

1. Lightly press the pup's paws when playing with him, along with his ears and mouth. Basically annoy them so that when its time to groom and clean, they would be used to it.

2. Always have a ice cube in their fresh water - it helps them digest better.

3. Groom then ASAP (after vaccs) so that they are used to being groomed.

4. Continue to give nutrical (in my case enervite cause thats whatI've been giving once to twice a day)

5. Give baths once every couple of weeks.

6. Do not wipe them down after every poop or pee...it may irritate them.

7. Do not give pup sweater or jacket unless its really cold ( >30/35 degrees) so that they can build up their immune system.

** I need help - Zoe got his vaccs yesterday and he was fine however he's been sleeping ALL day! its 12:41 pm and he has not fully waken up yet. He woke up for half an hour and antoher time to poop. Now he's sleeping again and won't get up to play. Is this normal? I can't call my vet until tomorrow.

Thanks for sharing that information!!! I wouldn't worry about Zoe both my girls slept almost all day after their shots, esp. when they were young, I think it just takes it out of them for the day!!!

Good advise. I just have one question? Why put an ice cube in their water? Your post says it helps them digest, but all mine want to do with ice cubes is grab them out of the dish or dig them out and play with them!! Makes quite a mess.

I was perplexed with thte ice cude thing as well. All the vet said was it helps them digest and I'll take his word for it. How old are your pups? Mine just drinks the water. He's not a big eater either which worries me.

THINGS I FORGOT:

You're not supposed to bath, spray or wipe any sort of flea medication on yorkies. A flea collar should never be used. There is a special med for them to take if there is a flea problem. I would have never known, I had beagles and a Lab before this. I always had a flea collar on them.

Yes! This is a GOOD one!!! We messed with Sully's paws and tail and ears and held him upside down (gently) and EVERYTHING when he was a puppy so that he woudn't be annoyed easily when he grew up. Now, my little 2 yr old cousins play with him (supervised of course) and he doesn't mind when they hold him funny or pull his hair a little. It's great!

This one, I did not know! Does this apply the same for adult dogs, I mean if it's 40 degrees isn't that cold for them and we should put on a sweater/jacket?

As for your question...I thought the same way. He told me that Dogs skin/coat needs to adjust to cold weather and if we keep "babying" them with jackets or blankets their ability to resist the cold will never be to its full potential therefore making it easier for them to chill and get sick (weaker immune system). I believe the same applies to adult dogs. This is my impression of the theory when he explained it to me and it makes sense. I would see how badly my dog is shivering and decide from there what is too cold for him.

I've never given Eddie nutrical and figured it was too late once he grew up. He's 1 1/2. So the vet says give it to adult dogs routinely? Anyone else hear that? Just curious.

I know I never gave it to my pups once they got bigger than 2 lbs. I keep some on hand in case they are sick.

HMM--My Edie has NEVER had Nutrical. Not that I don't like it...just have no opinion on it, and my vet never recommended this. Think we'll stick with what we have been doing as it seems to work.

I'd also like to add what my vet told me:

Baby shampoo is fine to wash them with. Baby food is fine to feed them with. And when they are small, they dont need anything special to drink. Tap water is fine.
