| Hated cotton coat is coming off! When I decided to get a yorkie it was because of the beautiful silky hair that I saw on other yorkies. I'm so disappointed at Gunners cotton coat. He will never have the beautiful silky coat I dreamed of having. Instead I will have to keep him short to keep him from matting. We are at our camper and he has to have his harness on and it tangles his hair terribly. I comb and brush him constantly, to no avail... I'm so bummed. I love Gunner dearly, but I wish I'd known about this stupid cotton coat! Does anyone know if the hair on the tail comes off too?

| Sorry to hear that Gunner's hair will have to come off. I grew Momo's hair to the floor when he was about a year old & cut it off to save my sanity loll. I did leave his tail long bc he has a full tail. He's now in a 'Joey' cut, where his body is shaved shorter, legs & tail is left long.

| I feel your pain. My Molli has a cotton coat and I keep it short pretty much all year. I grew her ears out at one point but even those got matted up. I found Johnson&Johnson baby hair detangler works pretty well but you pretty much have to brush them everyday. On the plus side I like that she will always look like a puppy

| Sorry you are disappointed in his coat. You may come to love him in a shorter coat. I wouldn't have my pups any other way cause they are so darn cute and soft (even though Tiki has silky, and my Morkies are kind of combo). I love the "Joey" cut as Jenny mentioned, and there is still plenty of long hair on the legs to look fancy.

| I love Blazer's cotton coat. I keep him in a short cut because he is so very active, though I don't cut the tail hair. He has a cropped tail but with the long hair on it it looks a lot longer and like a little flag. =) I love it! I keep his face and legs a little longer, too.

| Thanks all. It's been a sad time, I love a beautiful yorkie coat. I'll be grooming him when DH brings up my grooming equipment on Thursday. I'll post a photo when I get him done. I think I will cry as I'm cutting it off, so much work. He is going to look so different.

| Have you tried using a silky lined harness on him? They can still mat but not as bad... I even use one for my silky coats... always a bit of a pain to brush out after a walk... and forget the woods, lol!

| Yes, I have a silk harness. He hates being brushed and combed because of the knots. I'm frustrated. He's frustrated. We give up.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | No, leave the hair on his tail. You have to keep brushing him everyday. Galen used to fight me to be brushed. I used to have a bag of Cheerios and give him 1/2 pieces as I brushed him. Also he has a special chew toy that is only given to him for grooming. It is his favorite toy. When you shave him. Keep up with the brushing every day. I got a soft cat brush to do it. It helps with him getting used to it. I even brush his legs and belly with it. I figured I would share my nakked baby picture with your so you get an idea of what he would look like. I wanted the topknot. If you have any questions just ask

| Buster also has the coat that mats...I keep him short and brush, brush, brush. I use a detangler to help with the mats and what I can't brush out, I cut out. Since he has a short cut, it doesn't really matter. I too, was disappointed that he will never have a coat like the standard Yorkie but I love him to pieces and would probably keep him short anyway since he hates to be brushed.

I meant a silky T shirt (or similar) to wear under the walking harness...

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I have both cotton coat and silky... I much prefer the cotton. You can still keep your pup long but will need to do more grooming than you would with the silky coat. Plus if you keep the hair under the pit area, between the legs and under belly cut short possibly even shaved it wont mat. I keep my cotton coat in a modified schnauzer cut. She has a long skirt but I shave her back & neck like a schnauzer. Keeping her skirt and head done in a Yorkie style. Love it !! Here's my Ruby Bella
