Question about AKC's pedigree research program.

For a dog with papers from another domestic registry
If you cannot obtain AKC papers, AKC has a new program where we are researching pedigrees of dogs that do not have AKC paperwork to determine if the dog comes from AKC registrable stock.
In order to determine AKC registration eligibility, you will need to send AKC a copy of your dog’s pedigree, registration application and/or registration certificate from another registry. You can also submit documentation provided by the breeder such as a contract or bill of sale. The dog may qualify for registration if the pedigree shows no break in AKC lineage and the dogs in the pedigree originate from AKC registrable stock.

How does it work exactly? I mean, it sounds like it can be manipulated easily right? If all they do is research names on the pedigree from any registry. Couldn't someone find a pedi online, slap those names along with others and submit? Is AKC desperate for money?

Good questions, and I don't know the answer -- but it does kind of appear like it would very easy to manipulate the system...not very foolproof perhaps.

If your dog is from another registry, but at one time BOTH parents and all grandparents etc. were registered with the AKC and the dogs had been sold with breeding rights and was eligible for AKC membership, but the breeder, for some reason, choose not to register the offspring with them, the offspring may be eligible for membership in the AKC. All P&Q's have to be met and the official paperwork must be in place. At one time. some breeders left the AKC because new companies were offering free rates to register with them, and they didn't participate in showing their dogs anyway so they didn't think AKC membership was that important. With the internet, buyers are more informed and most of them want a dog who is eligible to be registered with the AKC even though they don't want to register the dog or breed. So breeders who have left the AKC can now come back, but the AKC is a stickler on paperwork, so that must be in place.

Thank you for the info everyone. I dont know. It just seems to easy to make up a pedigree by searching online for Akc pedigrees and sticking those dogs on another pedigree from ckc or aca and getting registered

Yes, but how would you get a bill of sale? You would need a bill of sale from the breeder of those dogs.

I called AKC and they said if they find lineage they will send papers for registration. No bill of sale needed.

I called the Akc and they said if they fine the lineage they will send that person registration paperwork. No bill of sale needed.

Registering dogs to AKC has never been 100% perfect, there are many breeders who forge paperwork. As long as I have had dogs registered with AKC I have know even show breeders who forge paper work. So this would not be a new thing.

This is true, I know specific breed clubs are developing master lists because they don't believe the AKC is a through as it should be. I think maybe a DNA test for every generation might result in more honesty.

I believe the AKC is not as credible as it use to be. I think all these other registries have hurt their bottom line. I still believe that the AKC is best, but I have lost a good deal of faith in them in the past few years. Not just in Yorkshire Terriers either, but in a good many of the large breeds.
