| New to this forum - need advice on puppies Hello everyone, I just joined this forum but had been coming here for some Yorkie info for a while. Our beloved Yorkie passed away last December. Although we're still grieving, my husband and I feel we're ready for a new puppy to fill our home and hearts with Yorkie love once again and had looked at four places yesterday. We don't want to spend too much time looking around but we also want to make sure we get the right match. One puppy we looked at was a male. He was born to a family in the city that lives in a small apartment. They're not professional breeders and this was their first litter. I think that they did this to augment their income. Anyway, they told us that the three other pups were already gone at 8 weeks but they kept this one a little longer because he was too small (60 grams at birth). The mother is about 4.5 lbs (and she's beautiful! - I wanted to buy her!) and the father is 3.7 lbs. (they don't own the father). The pup is now 12 weeks old and when we came to see him, he looks like he's almost as big as the mom so I doubt if he's going to stay around the same weight as his mom. I suspect that because she was a tiny pup, they might have gone overboard with feeding. Any view on his growth? Could the pup stay small at this stage / current weight? As we travel with always took our Yorkie on vacation with us, also when flying, we want to do the same with our next Yorkie -- and so the pup that we get should grow to around 6 lbs. Thanks in advance for your advice. |

| Puppies can't be fat so him being bigger is not because of over feeding. I would want a puppy from experienced breeders who know there lines are free of genetic illnesses and I would not take a pup from there mom until they are 12 weeks because there mom is teaching them a lot up to those 12 weeks. Breeding a female yorkie under 5 pounds is not ethical and can be very dangerous.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and WELCOME to YT ! Do you mean that this puppy is only like 9-12 wks old and is as big as Mom already? Bc that would be very unusual. How old is the pup exactly and what is the actual current weight?

| A puppy at 12 weeks old will generally double their weight or more by maturity. It sounds odd that he is almost as big as his mom if he is still a young puppy.

My husband believes that he would stay small because of the mom's size but I'm not convinced. The mom is gorgeous. Really beautiful. That's why we're bummed that the pup is so big. In defense of the family/breeder, they might not be a specialist breeder but we could see that they really cared for the puppy unlike the others that we've seen so far. | |
