Default Animal planet "Too Cute"

I was watching AP last night - the Too Cute series that tell the stories of three litters of pups from birth to adoption. I watched two hrs and in each litter the pups were sold at 10 wks. I think this is the norm. Each of my yorkies were 10 wks when I got them. This was before I discovered YT and found out that 12 wks was the desirable age. I would guess that most breeders sell at 10 wks.

Yeah, I saw that too. I got a bit upset with the little kids carrying the yorkie pups...

Watched it. Loved it. Especially "Lola". I also think letting pups go at/by 10 weeks is the norm for pups that are healthy and for breeders that are not members of YTCA.

8 weeks is legal, 10 weeks may be 'the norm', 12 weeks is optimal for Yorkie pups. So much is learned from the mom and being with the littermates during weeks 11 & 12. Also at 12 weeks, the pups are stronger and can better handle the stress of moving to a new home, new people and a new environment. Waiting gives their immune systems a little more time to mature, and lessens the frequency of a pup going hypoglycemic, which is a threat until they're 12 weeks old.

That series is just "too cute"!!! I love it! Keeping the puppies until they are 14 weeks old, assures that the puppy has received a complete set of "puppy shots" from the breeder. This speaks volumes about the care and concern and attention your breeder has invested in your puppy. Your breeder is very likely informed and educated with regard to latest vaccination protocols.

What I have noticed is most of the breeders who's litters are on the show are not good breeders. The fact the small dogs are not kept until 12 weeks, pups are aloud outside at a very young age, they let kids who are to young just carry them around, and a few more things. I think the norm is bad breeders and they mostly let there pups go at 8 weeks. But the mother club of yorkies says 12 weeks and studies show they are still learning from there mom at 12 weeks. I follow a small puppy mill/ backyard breeder on fb for a certain reason and she said she was contacted by the show and it made me cringe. What the show is showing people is that these bad breeders are where you should get a pup and it saddens me.

I haven't seen the Yorkie episode, but honestly? I am always happy to see pups exposed to new things, situations, kids, people. I would rather get a dog from a breeder who socializes extensively rather than shelters them from the world for 12 weeks. I am not saying to be irresponsible and bring the pups to a dog park, or anything like that. But I don't think all breeders who give pups away at 10 weeks are bad or irresponsible and that is a pretty blanket statement to make.

In Jackson's case, I am so glad I got him at 9 weeks and not 12. He did come from a BYB and he was never exposed to anything other than the woman's small Baltimore City townhouse and basement. I was happy to begin socializing and helping him explore the world sooner rather than later. He was also large, already 5lbs at that age.

But a responsible way to introduce them to kids is for the kids to be sitting not picking them up where if they fall they could break something or get hurt. It worked out for you and Jackson but in a lot of cases it doesn't and the dogs have socialization and bitting problems. Also a breeder who is letting pups go young has probably skipped a lot of other important things that should be done to insure there doing best by the pups and the breed. We had a big parvo break out in my mom county to the point the Amish could not bring things to the farmers market just in case it came on there stuff because they had lots of pups that ended up with parvo and in that situation it could be dangerous to expose a puppy to that and it's even more dangerous for small bred pups because they are so small.

Default Too Cute

Carmen in NJ (Stone Hill Silkies) has a litter of silkies that AP is using on an episode of Too Cute. I'm dying to find out when it will air. It will be interesting to see if they stay with her for 12 weeks. They were born on 2/27/14. Wonder how long it takes for editing and such before it airs? I keep checking her FB...

Personally, I have a hard time with a lot of AP programming. They make pet ownership look like such an easy casual thing. They say stupid things like "if you have an apartment then these small dogs are great for you because they don't need as much exercise as the larger pet." But small dogs need just as much and sometimes more exercise than larger pets. People come away with the idea they can get a little dog and coop it up all day and don't have to exercise it.

They never have true professional breeders on there that would give sound advise about pet ownership. Just because a person has had dogs cranking out litters of puppies several times a year for 20 years does not mean they are good breeders but that is who they have on AP.

Another case of a bad breeder being shown on there. She is breeding a lot of mixes and off colors too. I think I saw where she was trying to pass a yorkie silky mix off as either a full bred silky or full bred yorkie.

This is true. Some of those shows are kind of a big joke when it comes to dog breeds and such, lol. I think they're an okay starting point to maybe get a 'feel' for a breed, but definitely shouldn't be the deciding factor.

I was so disappointed to learn of that.

Lola's breeder was the breeder for the yorkie pups on the Too Cute that aired this week and I can tell you that her pups did not leave at ten weeks of age. Like most TV shows, that whole thing was staged. She is an excellent breeder and would never do that. I was almost in the scene pretending to take the pup home.
