I bragged about it and now I'm confused.

Ok. I wrote a thread last week bragging on my new little girl Lucy Too about how she was already using a pee pad. Now I'm regretting it. Now she goes anywhere but on the pee pad it seems. Was it just a conincidence that she was using the pee pad the first week??? Does anyone know around what age they really know the difference in where they are suppose to go to the bathroom.

X-pen's - where do you find these? All I can find is baby gates or cribs for my puppy.

I see those post on here alot, and always think,, OH BOY... people tend to go from .to.... LOL
It takes them awhile to REALLy get the hang of it,, Bailey had stages, I would think he had it down,,then the next day,, he'd completely forget,,, YOU go OUTSIDE to go potty!
Eventually they get it... believe it or not..
I never used the pee pads so can't help ya with that..

Thanks, I guess it's a good thing I have alot of patience. My husband doesn't have as much. Were doing pads during the day and when were home were trying to take her outside but I guess it's going to take a little longer.

Of you go to www.petco.com and search for precision, you will find a very nice x-pen. I own it for my girl, I got the 24 inch high in black. It was reasonable and had free shipping!

As far far as the potty training... its work, and some are not fully potty trained for a year or more... Sorry. I know thats not the answer you wanted to hear.... but the name of the game is preventing accidents until then. Don't give her roam of the house, this is only asking for trouble. Keep her somewhat confined and you will have greater sucess! And sucess leads to more sucess, and that leads to real potty training! It will be a while before she is trustworthy enough to roam the house... so find that x-pen and limit her space for now. If you catch her going on it... praise Praise Praise! You also might want to look int o clicker training... it can be very usefull in potty training!

Like Rhonda, I see those posts a lot, too. I hope your husband develops some patience, because if not, then that doesn't bode well for the whole situation. Honestly, I don't know where people get the notion that a puppy can be house trained in the blink of an eye. Look how long it takes human babies to be potty trained!

I will tell you this much and that is that if there is no one home with the doggie during the day, then you are probably in for a long haul. They can't house train themselves and I hope the patience you say you have will hold up. There has always been someone home with ours, but I honestly don't know how people get them house trained when they aren't home.

Please tell your husband to be patient. You can buy the really nice x-pens at toysrus. They are plastic and I really like them.

If you have a fenced yard, the training will be 100% easier and faster, because they love to go outside. Also, hanging bells from the door and teaching them to ring the bells to go out seems to make training them a lot easier, too. Wishing you luck, patience, and fast house breaking!

thanks kathryn..... Right now she has access to the living room and kitchen while we are home. and she has access to the kitchen while we are away but I think it may be to much room for her.. also thanks for the info on the x-pen

Crystal, we had great success with our Toto and pad training with a treat and a "happy celebration"!! They learn quickly that praise means that they have pleased you! You have to watch for the successes and just ignore the misses! Sometimes they are too close to the edge and although standing on the pad, unfortunately, the little butt is hanging off the edge .... this was an effort and deserves praise! She was two last July and we still reward her for going on her pad and telling her what a "Good Girl" she is. It does take quite a while but now if she goes & we don't happen to see it, she lets us know and we have to our celebration and she rewards us by turning her little butt for a cleanup with a wipey!!

Ha-ha! That happens to me, too. This morning, for instance, I was sitting out there waiting on her and I was daydreaming. She walked up to me and let me know she did her thing and it was wipey time and treat time!

I had this Xpen and loved it. They also made it at different heights so you could get one that is taller. As far as the bragging goes thats tipical that as soon as you brag about them doing well on the pottytraining that it stops. Just keep it up she has the idea.

It's funny when they do that!! Toto has the tiniest "voice" I have ever heard and sometimes it's so tiny you can barely hear it and if you don't respond, it gets a tad louder! We love wipey time ... can't stand that pee pee smell, Patrick especially loves it because Toto loves to snuggle up close to his beard!!!
