| He's perfect, but... Chow! New to YT! I'm really impressed with this site. My baby Benzino "Benzy" was born on July 16th, 2013 I've had him since he was 8 weeks. I know that's a little early, but he adjusted perfectly. He never cried and has always slept through the night. Also, He rarely ever barks. He is my baby, my everything, I love him to death. He is soon to be four months and the only problem I'm having with him is the potty training. I want him to predominately go inside on the pee pads, but I take him for walks (...maybe once a day...30 mins) and he'll go outside too. He especially uses the pads when were in our/my room, but when I let him wander the house with other pee pads down for him it's like he doesn't even see/notice them. What should I do? Am I confusing him? I'm also praising him when he goes (if I see him, and scolding him when it's not on the pad) and also I'm trying to get him to go on demand by saying the phrase "go potty". Anyways... any tips? its getting kind of frustrating with him going everywhere. |

| HOW TO HOUSEBREAK YOUR DOG IN 7 DAYS, 2ND EDITION - Dog Training and Behavior - Dogwise.com I have a new Yorkie as well. I was thinking to train both ways as well, and this book was recommended to me. She seems to think we confuse our dogs if we leave pads all over the house. They should be taken to 1 spot and trained as you would if you were going to outside train them. She also claims not to let them out of your sight till they are trained. The book is very good, and inexpensive at $9.99. I would recommend it : |

| I agree they cannot tell the difference always from a pee pad and or carpet...sometimes it can confuse them. welcome to yt and wishing you the best getting the routine worked out for Benzy.

Firstly, he's a very, VERY good boy - no crying, and sleeping through the night....don't worry, the barking will probably come!! Personally, I think you are confusing him with all those potty pads....potty pads should only be in one or 2 places in your home. At the trigger times, take him to the pad and wait. Then "good pee pee/good poo poo" as he's actually going. Then a treat. It might be far easier for you if you were to confine him more closely? To a big pen or a room, maybe bathroom, when you're not there? I wish you luck! Sally + Harry x | |

| These are some good tips and advice. I can see how it's so confusing for him now...shame on me lol. I think he'll get the hang of it once I start with one spot because he goes on the pad in my room frequently, which is where I have his cage and Xpen set up. I also think I might consider getting that book...thank you. |

| Definitely don't put down tons of pads. Designate the one or two spots depending on the size of your home. Keep him within close range of the pad. Most pups will not want to travel far, or miss out on action, to go to a pad far away. I wrote about training my boys for both the pad and outdoors: Potty Training Small Dogs - Dog Life and Style
