| Hello From Idaho Hi everyone! My name is Tammy and I live in a very small rural town in Idaho. I am the new momma to a 1 year old rescued "parti" yorkie named Piper. I'm brand new to yorkies so was doing a search to find more info and came across YT. Hoping to learn lots from you all!! My girl came from a breeder/hoarder that had 60+ yorkies and had no dog food so was feeding them all bird seed!! She was severely malnourished, had mites, lice, worms, coccidia, ear infections and a mouth infection. She was in another breeders home for 4 months before coming to live with me. I have had her a little over a week and she is still a little skittish but I see huge improvements in her on a daily basis. She is very small weighing in at 2lbs 9oz but is very small framed. For some reason around this time of night she acts very scared at the TV especially. She does not like for you to be in her face and will look away from you. This makes me sad because I just want to kiss her!! She's getting better though. Anyone have any good feed suggestions to try and put a little bit of weight on her? She will be going to the vet in the next couple of weeks to be spayed and I worry about her being so little. She has been to her first professional groomers appointment and that didn't go too well. My groomer is AWESOME and just did what Piper would allow her to do because she didn't want to freak her out too bad. Anyone have suggestions on helping her there? I do brush her on a daily basis and have ordered shampoo, conditioner, and detangler from Yorkie Splash and Shine. I do have clippers and was wondering if I just turned them on if that would help her become a little less scared of the sound??? Thank you for any tips and advise and looking forward to my yorkie journey!! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | WELCOME and CONGRATS on your new sweet baby! And bless your heart for taking her in. She sounds like she's had quite a tough journey, but I know you'll get her to trust and open up . As for food, what are you feeding her now and does she like it? Is there a reason you want to change it? I feed raw frozen, but think there are some awesome kibbles out there too. Are you looking for grain free, or anything in particular? A couple dense calories treats you could give her would be little blobs of peanut butter and bits of cheese. I'm not surprised she was spooked at the groomers, I think if I were a dog I'd find the groomer pretty terrifying too. This is why we groom our 3 at home...I just don't ever want them to be alone in stranger's hands unless it's a must like at the vet. Also, my Wylie had such traumatic experiences at the groomer's when he was a pup, that we then vowed no more groomers for our kiddos. You could easily do it yourself...just brush a few times a week, trim areas that prove troublesome, and bathing is easy (or, will get easier, in your kiddo's sake). And yes, it's a great idea to turn the clippers on and just leave it, paying it no attention...do that every once in a while; eventually bring it closer to her and just sit it there so she gets used to it being close...and keep progressing from there. Anyway, - CONGRATS again .

| Welcome to YT! Bless you for taking this little girl in and taking such good care of her. I feed Royal Canin, but there are several good choices out there. I'm hoping your Vet will make sure she's healthy enough for a spay. Is she eating good now, and what are you feeding? Good Luck and baby steps.. don't rush her into too much too soon, you want her to trust you before a lot of stressful things are done to her. |

| First off, I wanted to say THANK YOU for rescuing this little girl!! I am so happy she is in a good home Yes, I would occasionally turn the clippers on/off without actually using them to get her used to the sound and eventually groom her at home. I groom my two because of all the horror stories I've heard about different groomers. As for food, what are you feeding her now? I feed Acana, but there are several good kibbles out there. You just have to figure out what works for your pup. And CONGRATULATIONS!! I'm glad you found your baby and am super happy you found us You will love it here!

| Do her a favor and add the weight before you put her under to be fixed. Yorkies are very small and one that is not top notch could have problems. I lost my baby boy this way and do not want anyone to go through this. I agree with fixing her but make sure she is in the best health possible before doing it. Don't rush just because the vet is recomending this. All my babies are on grain free food as best as I can afford. Every dime spent on them comes back 10 fold in the love they give. Welcome to the world of the Yorkie you will never want to leave. Enjoy your Baby! |

| Hi all, thank you for the welcome!! She is just the sweetest little girl and it makes me sad that she had such a rough start in her life. I am currently feeding her Beneful Healthy Weight (I thought this was kinda weird where she is so little) as that is what the breeder I bought her from was feeding her. I didn't think it was a good idea to upset her tummy by switching her to a new food on top of being relocated. She is eating well with no adverse effects. She has a very silky soft shiny coat that is very thin. She's getting to where she loves to cuddle up on mom's lap to take her naps and does not like to be left alone in the house even for a few minutes. Any ideas what I can do to help ease this anxiety? |

| Hi and welcome to YT. Your baby is so lucky to have found you. She sounds like a little trooper. I would just maybe love on her and let her tell you when she's ready for some attention. Maybe you could just lay some items of yours so she could snuggle up on them so she can feel that you are always around. I think you are correct in not changing her food on top of all the other changes going on with her. Maybe when you are ready, you could try giving it as treats to her to get her used to something different. As for the sound of the clippers, I would just take it easier. If she was stressed at the groomers, she may continue feeling that even though she's not being groomed. Since you are brushing daily, she'll get used to that and I'm sure that process will become not too much of an ordeal. It sounds as though your doing everything right, just enjoy each other and take your time getting to know each other.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk, and congratulations on your sweet little Parti girl. What is her name? I'm sure you can transition to a better dog food, SLOWLY, as she does not need to be on diet dog food unless she has liver problems, in which case the lower protein and fat is advised. It sounds like she is already adapting, and will respond well to the new loving environment. Luckily she is young and not in her bad situations as long as some dogs are. You two can bond and hopefully have a long life together. It seems like everything in her new world will have to come with patience and baby steps. You are lucky to have found each other.

| Welcome to YT. I too am new. We just got our precious baby 2 weeks ago today she is adorable as well as your little one. Congratulations for taking in a sweetheart. Bless you. You just be patient, give her love and all will work out. I feed Royal Canine. And give Honey Nut Cheerios as a treat. I would say turn the clippers on at times and just leave it for little while she'll get used to it and the more you can do for her the better off your little girl will be. Welcome to the Yorkie world Hugs to you both. Cheryl and Mysty Last edited by MystysMom; 08-03-2013 at 10:52 AM. |
