Orange County CA teacup vets?

Looking for a good vet in Orange County, CA who specializes in mini or teacup breads. I have a 3 year old mini yorkie 5 lbs. I have heard this breed can't be anesthetized so I can't get her fixed, or have any kind of surgery. I have also been told that breeding is very dangerous.

Any ideas?

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. There are many people here whose smaller Yorkies have been spayed and anesthetized for other procedures like dental cleanings.

Have pre-op bloodwork done and discuss the anesthesia protocol with the vet. It is good to look for a doctor who has experience with smaller dogs.

Breeding is risky with any size female Yorkie, and the risk increases greatly under 5 pounds.

well... you have come to the right place to learn!!

I have a 5.25 lbs girl...I have had her spay and each year I have her dental. I agree it is best to find a vet who has experience with the smaller breeds..but it can be done.

btw... on this site teacup is ofter used to refer to yorkies that are very tiny-- under 3 lbs. A 5 lbs. yorkie is just perfect

Well there is no sure thing as a teacup or mini yorkie a yorkie is just a yorkie and the standard is not to exceed 7 pounds so your yorkie is right on standard. Yorkies can most definitely be put under anesthesia. I would be worried about anything under 3 pounds but 5 pounds is fine you just have to make sure that you get the pre surgery blood work done. She is a great weight to get spayed. Many yorkies on this board have been put under to be fixed and have surgery's. Glad you came here so we can help you.

I have been fostering Missy for about 1 year, and now she is mine. She has been under 5lbs until the last vet visit. I was told she is a teacup, but I think you are right, after reading more about the breeed, I think she is a regular Yorkie, or mini yorkie?

I still would love to find a good vet that specializes in small breeds. I live in Tustin, CA (orange county).

There is no such thing as a mini or a teacup they are marketing terms used by bad breeders to get more money for there pups. Its so great you rescued this little one. Besides getting out the phone book and calling and asking I'm not sure how you would go about finding a vet that specializes in small dogs maybe a google search.

This is totally wrong I have a girl who is just barely 3 pounds and I had her spayed and a dental done.

5 Pounds is just under the standard maximum of 7. Breeding under 5 pounds is not recommended, as it can be dangerous for such a small dog. I also wouldn't recommend breeding unless you are experienced. Being as she was a rescue/shelter dog, I am sure you don't have a lot of information on her background, her breeding lines, and testing can be quite expensive.

I have a 4 pound female, a 4 pound male and a 3 pound male, and they aren't micro or mini or teacup, as theres no such thing. They are AKC registered yorkies who just happen to be small. My vet has never had any qualms about putting them under for dentals or spay/neuter.

Welcome to yt! A standard sized yorkie is anything under 7 pounds. We also have several larger than that here but by definition there is no miniature or teacup or tiny class etc. just a yorkie

Their small size means that you have to have a vet that is well versed in anesthesia, but they absolutely can be spayed and have surgery, teeth cleanings etc. Because of that small size, spaying is something you absolutely want to have done unless you are an experienced breeder.

Call around to you vets in your area, or better yet try and contact a local YTCA member near you to see if they can recommend a vet who is experienced in Toy breeds.
