| The kind of food you are feeding can also be a factor when calculating how much food to give. Puppies are growing babies and you usually can't over feed them. Some foods are more concentrated than others. I would start out by reading the manufacturer's recommendations. They usually have guidelines according to the weight or breed of the pup. Divide that up throughout the day. Young pups usually need to eat 3 times a day. You can cut that down to 2 times a day after they are 5 or 6 months old. Some adult dogs will be fine with one meal a day while others need to have their food divided into 2 meals a day. Your manufacturer knows the caloric content of the food so they give you guidelines. You have to decide if your dog is more active or less active and watch to see if your dog is gaining too much weight or not enough. In general though the guidelines given by a good, reputable company should be pretty close to what your puppy or adult dog needs. |
