| Ummm...??? So I was researching other options to prevent wound licking with Taka licking his wound even with the E-collar on and I came across this: Licking Wounds: Dog Saliva as Antibiotic? | Dog Reflections Is this true? I always thought that them licking the wound is a cause of infection and thats the point of the E-collar and why the vets always drive their point in about NOT taking off the collar until they say so. (Which btw I refuse to take it off of him even though he can get around it) :/ |

| It's been said that a dog licks his wounds because that is a healing action. However, licking like that also irritates an incision and/or stitches. Irritation and inflamation leads to a worse wound and it definitely can become infected. Here is a real life example: My boy had a hot spot a couple of weeks ago. Licking it only made it MORE red and irritated which led to the hot spot becoming worse. (In the begininig, peroxide didn't even bubble...days after him licking it constantly when I couldn't stop him - peroxide bubbled like crazy!). Don't let him lick the incision. It will aggrevate and irritate it.

| Licking can cause irritation and ripping open of the would as well as infection. You should not let him lick.

| Something else...I talked to my vet and they did not prescribe antibiotics for Princess Sophie after her spay. I was concerned because every surgery I have had I was given antibiotics after. I was told that because the operation was done in a sterile environment and with the equipment they used, there was no need for antibiotics after this surgery unless the area became infected due to some factor at home. So far, no infection at all. I am very impressed. I don't know for certain but for some reason I don't think the surgery was done all by hand. I will have to ask about this when she goes back to get the 3 little stitches removed. We used onesies for about four days after surgery (1 new clean one each day) and she hasn't needed one since. Leaving her stitches alone. The site looks great!!

| thanks guys! I have stopped him every time I see him trying to lick there believe me. He looks at me like "crap i got caught!" lol. yesterday he really was trying to go after it but today not as much. maybe it was just itching while healing...the site doesnt look bad and looks like it is healing well, its on his hip so its easy for him to just turn around even with the e-collar and lick it. |

If it's itching, which P-Nut's wound after the FHO surgery was doing, the vet let me put some spray hydrocortisone on it. With that and the soft collar we had, there were no problems with him tearing sutures, etc. Maybe you could check with your vet about the spray (I wouldn't just do it without asking, in other words). | |
