I'm crying but they are happy tears!

For those who don't know me, my little Yorkie boy was a puppy mill dog and when I got him 8 weeks ago he wouldn't even look me in the eye. He was scared of every little noise and wouldn't come near me but we've been slowly building up some trust although he still runs from me if I walk towards him.

So tonight I'm sitting on the couch watching Dancing with the stars. He was in his bed but got up to go walkabout as he does sometimes, as long as I'm sitting down he feels safer to walk around. Suddenly he comes running out of my bedroom, with one of my socks in his mouth! His little feet were going so fast to get this sock to his bed, like he knew he had to hide it! A small thing to most but to see him doing what dogs usually do made me cry, but so happy to see that happen!

oh and I let him keep the sock, he deserves it lol

That is great news!! It is incredible what a little love will do to a dog. He knows you love him and is starting to feel secure. It won't be long bf he will jump in your lap and give you kisses

Ohmyohmyohmy - Tuppance is feeling safe and knows he's at home and starting to kick up his heels. When a dog starts to act like a dog - bark or hide socks or sleep on their backs all spread out and comfy - those are all signs that he's happy as a clam and feels safe. It's such fun to tick all those "normal" things off as a rescue starts to live again like he did before it all got so bad. Big congratulations for passing a milestone with Tuppance.

Thank you. Yes it is wonderful to see every little thing he manages to do. He does still shake when I pick him up so I'm not pushing that...but I go over and tickle his tummy and let him know a human touch isn't all cruelty, and he seems to know that now. I always loved Yorkies but never knew until I got him how much happiness I would get

Oh you are clever, knowing that with an abused/nervous rescue it's best to let them feel in control and let them do all of the approaching and work to get your affection. The more aloof but approachable you are, the more curious they are and seem to seek you out as they feel more comfortable around you, knowing you will never force your attentions on them, but wanting to curry favor with that alpha pack-leader mentality. I used to constantly move away from my new rescues whenever they got close and darn if those dogs wouldn't soon be dying to get my attention and would be nudging my hands for a pat. Seemed to break the ice faster than anything - just playing hard to get and letting that abused rescue for once in his life have some control.

I know what you mean. The first time Kaji play bowed to me, I was beyond the moon!!! The first time he played fetch (not really fetch, but close enough), I have on video! It's on YouTube. The first time he chewed up a tissue, I was over the moon! That was about a year ago, and he's never done it since. Oh!! My favorite memory, the first time he came down from my room to join me in the living room. I'm never going to forget that. I had him for 2 months, and he finally ventured out of the safety of my room.

Take pictures, video, whatever just capture the moment! You will treasure it forever, and get to see how little T has progressed. I know those are regular doggy things, but to me they're extra special because my nervous nelly doesn't do it. Ok, going to go watch the video of Kaji playing ball for the first time. I got over excited, scared him, and he peed all the way back up to my room. I didn't care. It was PROGRESS!!

Oh how wonderful!! So glad your Tuppance may be starting to come out of that shell. Its nice to read a happy story like this
