| Puppy Mill in Lancaster PA? Hello Everyone, I am looking to buy a yorkie in PA, and I recently came across a puppy I was going to visit. I recently found out that Lancaster PA is the puppy mill capital of the east coast and I'm worried about buying my puppy from a breeder in Lancaster now... Does anyone know if there are any reputable breeders in Lancaster, or should I just steer clear and buy from someone else? I'm also looking at a puppy from Petite Pups Kennel in Loganton PA. Any information anyone has is very much appreciated! Thanks, Cbucks |

| If you are going there to visit you will know if they are a puppymill or not by the number of dogs they have. Have you spoken to the breeder

| I called the breeder and arranged a time to go meet the puppy tomorrow. I was told they raise the puppies in their home. I'm just nervous. I want a happy, healthy, yorkie! :-) |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | The governor of Pennsylvania enacted some great kennel laws, after the Oprah show did an expose on Pennsylvania puppy mills. Now Pennsylvania has some of the best laws in the country regarding kennel conditions. If a facility is licensed, chances are they are at least getting some vet care and are being treated in a humane fashion. However, you don’t need a license to sell over the internet directly to the public, and these places that sell over the internet are the worse puppy mills you can imagine. My advice is don’t look for a bargain, try to find a breeder that is breeding for the right reasons and not just to make a buck, but because she really believes she has something to offer the breed. Go visit the breeder in person and don’t overlook the YTCA breeder referral for finding a breeder. Here's a link: Breeder Listing

| If they are raised in a home they are not a puppymill she could be a back yard breeder though. Does she do health testing? Will you be able to see the parents? What is her health guarantee> What is her breeding philosopy is she breeding to better the breed in another words breeding for the standard.

| My puppy actually came from a broker who got there puppies from an Amish puppy mill in that area. I had no idea about brokers until I found this site and researched some names on my pups papers. In my opinion these are things I would look for in finding a breeder they do health and genetic testing, you can go to there house, if they have an out building you can tour it, you can see the parents, the mother is not under 5 pounds, the puppies are registered AKC, they have a decent health guarantee, the breeder doesn't breed massive amounts of dogs or mixes and puppies are not taken from there mom until 12 weeks. I would also google there name and or there kennel name to see if you can find any info out about them. I know if you go and look at a puppy mill it will be hard to walk away with out a pup because you feel bad for it but think about the poor breeding dogs and that by buying that pup your helping the puppy mill stay in business and continue to abuse these poor animals.

| Thank you everyone! I'm visiting tomorrow, so once I meet them, I'll be able to get a better read on the situation as to whether they are a back yard breeder or not. |

| DO NOT PURCHASE ANY DOGS FROM PETITEPUPS OR VALLEY MEADOW, Petite pups is a puppymill and voluntarily shutdown...Valley Meadows is also a puppy mill...took their pups etc., they are scammers and neither one is currently licensed to sell ANY PUPS. They are selling off their "stock"...trust me on this...do NOT purchase from them.
