| New Addition I have a friend that just had her yorkie bred and told me she would save a puppy for me . My husband agreed to let me get a puppy, but the only thing is we already have a yorkie that is about 5 years old. Her name is Baby. I adopted her and she was already house broke and obeyed pretty well. I have many questions, but one question is will the new puppy follow and learn from Baby? I know I will have to potty train it, but I didn't know if it would learn too from example. Also, Baby sleeps at the foot of my bed and sometimes sleeps next to our bed in her cozy little bed. SHould I still keep the puppy in a crate in our room while we are sleeping even with Baby not being in a crate? any tips on how to train a puppy would be great. I am nervous but super excited. I probably won't have the puppy till late june, but I want to be super prepared. |

I would not crate it until it is a bit older unless you are there 24/7. The pup will need to relieve itself every couple of hours. An xpen or playpen is a great idea for when you are gone. I definitely would crate over night until the pup is older so it won't risk harm in the bed. Make sure you get up every few hours during the night, though...don't want the pup to "go" in the crate and then come to think it is ok to sleep in pee or poo Definitely join our YT family and ask all your questions. You will get some great info and tips

| Hi and welcome to YT! Lots of great people here to help you with any question you may have. It was recommended to me, when we brought Princess Sophie home, that we have her sleep in her crate at night with her crate on my night stand so she could see me and not be scared and help her with her separation anxiety. She did really well, even thought she cried for a short time, for about a week, then we brought her to bed with us and she has been there ever since. LOL When she was sleeping in her crate, we also had a blanket from the breeder's that smelled like her mommy which helped. I also purchased a "self-heating" crate pad to help her keep warm and that works very well too. We have a play pen that can hold her crate, a potty pad, food and water, and a few toys. She is confined to her play pen when we are away. It works really well. I have heard several other members here have the metal crate that can be attached to an X-pen for their pups and they are very happy with that arrangement as well. I'm sure that you will find your way as you welcome this new addition to your family. Just remember training is essential to having a socially acceptable puppy in your home and out of doors and being consistent helps a great deal. Please keep us posted on how things are going and don't be afraid to ask questions, I asked tons before we brought Princess Sophie home.

| thanks Thank you so much. I think I am going to do the crate playpen idea. There is actually someone always home at my house because I work third shift and my husband works day shift so the the dogs will only be left for about an hour maximum alone unless our schedules change. which i hope they don't till i get the puppy trained. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk And congrats on your new puppy. It would be good to refresh yourself about training and general puppy stuff. YT has many good threads. A good book to buy ( it even comes in a Kindle version) is Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies by Tracy Barr and Peter Veling.

I have thought of buying that book, but I didn't know if it was worth the money. I guess I just need to break down and get it. Is is a book that I will be able to go back to if I ever have any questions? I am also so glad that I have been able to find this website... my husband doesn't like talking about dogs. He acts like he doesn't like them, but he is in love with Baby and I know once I get the puppy he will like it too. The only thing is we live in an apartment and he didn't think two would be a good idea. I think and KNOW it will be fine, he just doesn't like a lot of change. lol | |
