Just bought Yorkie with lots of Question - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Hi, I have lots of question to ask and learn here, please help... I just bought my Yorkshire Terrier on 10/03, it's a Boy 16/03 will be 1 year old.
My Yorkshire name Brownie, he always barks early in the morning around 4am-4.30am when I go to him, he will just seat there. But why is he barking so early every morning? And I'm trying to toilet train him now to peepee and poopoo on the news papers sometime he will pee and poo there but most of the time he will do it out of it.

Please advice?

Hi and Welcome to YT!

As for the early morning barking... maybe has to do with his previous owner's schedule? Maybe he was fed breakfast at that time? You could try getting up with him, then every few days wait 15 minutes longer to try to get him to switch his internal clock.

As for the potty training, I would move the paper over to where he is pottying, you can also take a bit of the urine and scent the 'new' paper with it, that may help him to get the idea. Also use a food reward when he does 'make' on the paper. If he still refuses, paper his entire area so he has no choice but to go on it, then gradually remove some each day or two until you get to the amount you want to leave down, in the place you want to leave it. The food reward is key though and will help him learn.

Give it a try, give it time and you'll have a happy puppy and happy household. Just remember, you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar so don't yell or holler at your pup if a mistake is made. Just reward all the good things and he'll get the picture. Ours wake us up around that time also but it is because they need to go out and potty. Since he is using the floor maybe that is what he is trying to tell you. Welcome to YT.

I agree...since he's older, he is probably still on a past schedule. He's barking because he thinks it is time to get up (and probably poo and pee).

Hi all! Thanks for your help.! No more barking this morning I will see tomorrow again.! Actually I woke up at 4am today and waited for him to barks... Hahaa... As potty, he know he's wrong but don't know why he's not leaning. He poo & pee all over this morning & tear up all the news papers...

naughty boy...

Then again maybe he is trained to potty outside? He may be tearing up the paper out of frustration...

I don't think he's train to potty outside, he have been locked up in a small cage at the pet stop for months

nobody wanna buy him home due to his size is bigger than others yorkie. That what the seller told me...

Have you considered getting an Xpen to put him in when you are not right there with him to show him where to potty? Also they make puppy training pads that have a hormone already on them. The hormone attracts them to pee on the pad. They also prevent your floor from getting wet when he does use the pad.

Sometimes taking a dog for a walk will help get them to empty their bladder and bowels outside. The activity gets the body functions working and you have automatic outside potty use.

Did you ask the previous owner what his potty and sleeping habits were?

You can also try gauging his bowel movements. I can usually tell when my yorkies are about to go poop. Usually 2-3 hours after they've been fed.
And of course they always have to pee after they wake up. Doing this might help you prepare when he's about to go potty and then you can make the proper preparations for it. sooner or later he'll get the hang !
