| Our 9 week old Yorkie Titus I'm having trouble with my new puppy. Both my husband and I are in the military and we work late hours from 10 pm-7 am. We try to get Titus into a routine where we let him out of his kennel/cage to relieve himself outside at 7:30 (b/c of distance between the military base and our condo), feed and give him water right after, wait an hr and let him out to relief himself, we put him in his exercise pen with all his toys so we can do errands around the house before we go to bed (my husband likes to stay up after work sometimes until noon so he feeds and relieves the dog for lunch), and we put an alarm to feed/relieve at 4 pm for dinner. Titus is not doing so well with the exercise pen. He starts yelping/barking/screaming you name it he does it. His exercise pen is in the living room where all the action is happening. I would be doing stuff in the kitchen and he can see me from his cage. I try to follow advice and ignore him when he's barking but I feel bad for my neighbors. His exercise pen is filled with toys and I'm hoping he would get distracted by them but instead he whines and barks and this can go for minutes to hours. I only go to him when he stops crying and after I finish my house chores I play with him until I'm ready for bed. Once my husband and I get ready for bed and start to leave the room, Titus starts crying again. He also does this when we are getting ready to leave for work when he is put into his kennel for bed. I'm not sure what to do. I want him to be able to entertain himself if we are gone, busy with errands, or in bed instead of crying. Please help me. |

| I don't have much dealings with puppies. However, do you think it is because he is so young? Most breeders recommend keeping with mom until 12 weeks. Maybe he is having separation issues?

| I don't see any mention of long walks or extended play time with Titus. He needs to be able to relieve his energy during this time that you have with him so you must take the time to walk him and play with him extensively for at least an hour before putting him back in his crate. He must have a chance to run out the zoomies for a while as well as go outside to exercise prior to being crated again. if he does this he should be tired enough to sleep while you are at work. of course with him being so young he must have all his vaccinations prior to long walks

YT 2000 Club Member | I have a puppy and she loves attention. I know you are gone a fair amount of the day. Your puppy needs be able to play, go for walks and needs some quality time with their family. It sounds lonely! I tend to probably spend a lot of time playing, holding, grooming and just cuddling with my puppy! Yes, she is spoiled! I just think your puppy is not getting enough attention from the family. Yorkies love to be with people! Maybe some one could come in during the day and play or wake her a couple times. Just a suggestion.....

| I would not advise taking an unvaccinated puppy for walks...buthe does need exercise and he needs to be part of the action, not just watching the world go by from his playpen. When you and hubby are motoring around the house, maybe you can incorporate him into your activity. Babies this young tire easily and after a couple of hours of activity and play, he will be ready to go down for his nap! He just wants to be next to his people....not separated from what they are doing! Normally, he would still be with his momma and littermates, playing and learning things that make him a great dog when he grows up....YOU are now his "momma and littermates" and you are going to have to devote a lot of touchie/feelie time to him so he is secure and confident.....and learning what is acceptable and what isnt. |

| Forgot to mention We have not gotten his paperwork from the breeder yet so I try not to let him go outside unless he needs to relieve himself. I (and my husband) usually play with him before and after his meal or he just likes to cuddle/sleep next to me on the couch when I'm watching tv or going on the computer. I know we are not supposed to spoil toy breeds as much even if we want to but can we have this baby sleep with us or would that not be a good idea? |

| I really appreciate all your advice. I'll try to have longer play times with Titus. I don 't want him outside walking where other dogs will be until I get his papers from his breeder about vaccinations. Titus usually cuddles with me on the couch when I wake up but I also wanted to know if it was a good idea for him to sleep with us or cuddle with us in bed or would that be something that will cause problems later down the road? Senior Yorkie Talker | I have a litter of 5, 9 week old puppies and hard work is an understatement, think its normal the crying when they not getting attention and when you have sorted all other problems that casuse distress like hunger, dirty pads ect, so have been trying a mix of play time with and without us not sure if you can buy this in US it's a little ball that you fill with treats and as they play treats come out making play and food (pups two fav past times lol) only thing is you need to make sure the treats are ok for the age as most treats are from 3 months even ones that say "puppy". At this age would say a little run in a garden is enough exercise too much would cause them to use far too much energy, walks are for much older puppies. Another thing is when he is quiet in the pen praise and reward this will help him learn quick. Only other advice would be it takes time Molly took a week to settle in fully and be happy in her own company, good luck

You can take aGatorade bottle...one of the regular sized, for one person, not that 1/2 gallon jug size....it is a heavier plastic than say a plastic coke bottle, and the mouth is wider.....put several handfuls of puppy kibble in the bottle, and put it in with the baby....he will knock it around and the kibble will start to fall out a couple of pieces at a time, from inside the bottle....this keeps my litters occupied for a very long time!!! Even the grown adults love this game, but you have to watch them continously so they dont chew the plastic....the little puppies have tiny teeth that can not chew the heavy dity plastic of the Gatorade bottle! I have 3 ex-pens I connect and put out on my patio in the back yard, where NO other dogs have been, and after the babies have at least 2 vaccinations in them, I will put them out in the sunshine and fresh air for just a little while....they have a blast, exploring the new area....that is ALL the outdoor exposure mine are allowed..... | |

| I'm just wondering if I let my puppy sleep with me will this make the separation anxiety worse? And he's not potty trained yet so as long as I have an alarm set to take him out to relieve himself can he still go to bed with me? He does not like being in his exercise pen at all so I'm going to copy Yorkiemom1's method and put the exercise pen outside for him to enjoy the sun a bit after he gets his second shots. I dont understand the gatorade bottle method....is the cap still on or off? Also with the kibble is this technically lunch/dinner for him or is it a snack? |

| Update on Titus Titus is now 13 weeks old yay! Titus still barks if I leave him alone but he's kind of gotten better. I succumbed and have him sleep with me (still not on the bed tho lol). I have him take naps with me on the couch when I come home from work which he happily obliges. We no longer put him in his ex-pen because he has figured out how to climb out of it so the ex-pen is useless. I just watch him like a hawk but I still dont catch him when he pees sometimes lol It looks like he's sitting all pretty until I realized he peed! On the weekends I sleep normal hours so he doesnt cry at all at night when I sleep in my bedroom with him in his crate. He's really good at walking up and down the stairs now which sometimes is a problem when I have to feed the cats at the bottom of the stairs where the cat litter box is. I dont want Titus to eat the litter or the poop. Hes at the point where he wants to put everything in his mouth: rocks, leaves, bark, you name it. |
