| Hello, we are new! Hello, hello! First of all I hope this is the right place to stop by and introduce ourselves. We picked up our Yorkie J on Wednesday after a long time researching the breed (now he is here it has all fallen out of my head.) J is 8 weeks & 3 days old, he had his first injections today and is currently asleep on his mother's scent blanket. He isn't fluffy like his brothers and sister and apparently the last time (and the first time) the mother had a litter she had a smooth pup who eventually turned fluffy. I'm not bothered about it by any means, I'm just interested to know of anyone else had a smooth 8 week yorkie and what process of his coat changing is like? I have about 7 bazillion questions which will all come pouring out in no time I'm sure but I'll be lurking about reading up and trying to do my best. By the way I'm based in the UK, are there many UK folk on this forum? I'll try to get someone photos online because he is so gorgeous is makes my heart melt. |

| Hello! Welcome to YT!! We would love to see photos of your little J. There are quite a few members from the UK that contribute to this forum. So glad you found us . There is a ton of information for you and J here. I guess Sophie's coat was rather smooth at 8 weeks. She has a somewhat fluffy soft cotton coat now. You can check her album on her page and see how Sophie's coat progressed and there is a sticky that refers to coat and color. Bring your questions, that's why everyone is here, to share their experiences.

| Thank you all so much for the warm welcome. J is such a cutie but he had a traumatic start to life I think. The breeder was run over and killed whilst walking his mother about 2 weeks ago when he was just over 6 weeks old. The mother went missing for a couple of days but was eventually found thanks to the micro chip. V sad circumstances. We had been waiting for a specific breeder but our friend worked with the husband of this family(and we've met them & their dogs before) and we decided to help take a pup if we were a good match for one of them. I won't lie, I love the appearance of Yorkies which is why we've been reading up on them for a while. But J was the least typical Yorkie out of the six in the litter but we instantly knew we we're a good fit. Both his parents are Yorkies and four of the pups were total fluff balls and looked very typically Yorkie whereas J is smooth with only a little fluff developing around his chin (apparently there was another in the litter just like him but we didn't see him because he'd already found a home). Coat wise he looks like a much younger pup than his size would portray and everyone says he looks like a cross of some kind. I'm confident both of his parent are Yorkies (although because of the family circumstance I don't have anything official to document that) and whilst I don't mind one bit if he is smooth forever I just idly wonder if he will ever become fluffy like his siblings. Any smooth pups at 8 weeks become more typical with time? |

| I got Abby closer to 11 weeks, for her personality not her looks! She had a very short, almost crunchy coat, her ears were very large almost hairless- even the vet questioned her AKC registration. As she grew over the next few months I thought perhaps she had Chihuahua in her. By 6 months with lots of good food (I think as one of five in the litter she did not eat enough)her hair started to come in nice and smoother- I trimmed her every week to get the crunchy hair off. Now at 17 months she is silky, shiny, smooth, and is really quite beautiful with a lot of silky terrier attributes (Thank you Carmen!) |

| J is one cutie pie! Welcome to YT to both of you! I am saddened to hear what happened to the breeder. Good news that the microchip brought the mama home.

| Hello and welcome. Your puppy is adorable short fur and all. I haven't met that many Yorkie puppies to know much about fur development at that age. It is possible for a female dog to mate with more than one father and it is also possible for a female to mate later in the heat and give birth to puppies that are several days younger than the others. I have also heard of something called a "red legged" Yorkie that tends to have a shorter coat. I'm sure the breeders could tell you more about that. Sometimes one puppy will get pushed out by the other pups and not get as well fed as the other pups. Many times they catch up once they are being fed on their own. Since their mom was missing for a couple of days she could have had some nursing problems after they found her or it could just be the genes. Hopefully, he will get some more length as he gets older. I hope all goes well with you and your new little baby. I'm sure you will love him no matter what length his fur gets. |
