| Stinky Yorkie Breath! So I need some advice..Hal's breath is horrible and it smells like he ate something that died...twice. I know it's his teeth issues b/c he has 4 baby teeth that need to be removed (appt scheduled for nov 26th!) but I need to fix this breath now..He licks my face and now I am pretty sure i am just as stinky as him... I have tried brushing his teeth but I can't do it alone b/c he fights with me and the second i put the finger brush in his mouth he bites me! I have some doggy fresh dental wipes, but its not enough. Any ideas on how I can freshen his breath? Maybe a special treat you know of? Any help is appreciated Thanks, alina & hal |

| There really isn't much you can do until those teeth get removed.

| I have this issue with Mandie. She has 3 canines that have to come out next month. I do brush her teeth even though she fights and hates it. Each time it gets a LITTLE easier lol

| I basically asked this question last week and it was the same response- it's the teeth and there isn't really much we can do about it until the baby teeth come out. I just keep trying to brush Blazer's teeth and giving him hard things to chew on. It helps because then the loose teeth come out and the stink goes away until more get loose. =) Meantime, just don't let him lick your face, I guess. =)

| I don't know if this would even be part of your problem, but thought it might be worth mentioning. Betty Boop started having stinky breath although I brush her teeth almost everyday. She has no baby teeth as she is 3-1/2 years old. I took her to the vet to see if having her teeth cleaned would help with her stinky breath. He said allergies can cause drainage which can cause stinky breath. The pollen here has been very bad and has caused itching and dry skin, but is clearing up now. Her breath doesn't smell anymore, so I'm guessing he was right.

I used to try to brush Huey's teeth, but I discovered that if I put the enzymatic doggie toothpaste on the brush, he will do it himself. I swear! He holds the toothbrush in his front paws & chews on the bristles. He gets the front, back and both sides. Vet said his teeth looked really good and he is almost 4 yrs old. I did learn that the cheapest, hardest plastic toothbrushes are the best. The softer ones he can eat all the bristles out of in a matter of hours. The cheap hard ones he can chew on for a week or more. I buy the 4-packs at the drug store & replace them frequently as the bristles disappear. | |

| Hopefully they will clean your dog's teeth when they remove the baby teeth. Retained baby teeth can be a big problem in the mouth. There are enzyme gels and sprays that you can use on your dog that work better than brushing. There are also things you can add to the drinking water to keep the mouth clean between cleanings. Using these products can extend the time between cleanings. Amazon.com: Petzlife Oral Gel 4Oz and Oral Spray... Dogs that eat raw food do not get the plaque on their teeth that kibble eaters do. The enzymes from the raw keep the teeth clean. Dogs bodies are made to digest raw foods unlike humans. Now pet supply companies are selling enzymatic products that clean the teeth and keep them from retaining plaque. Plaque means there are harmful bacteria in the mouth and that can also cause gum disease. Once the gums are diseased the teeth fall out or need to be removed. |

| Diet has no exclusive relationship to periodontal disease. My 12 year old had barely any tartar or oral disease when he had his first dental a few months ago. He has eaten a soft home cooked diet his whole life. On the other hand, my 1.5 tear old is at the dentist today having his teeth cleaned. Our veterinary dentist told me that there is no rhyme or reason to periodontal disease. So the best thing you can do as an owner is to brush your dog's teeth every day and have regular professional cleanings under anesthesia when your dog is in need. Baby teeth do smell until they come out. There isn't much you can do. After that though, stinky breath means something. Dogs don't have bad breath unless there's an issue.

| Honestly, the breath won't get better until you have those teeth removed. Troy had a similiar issue. 6 teeth removed and now his breath is much better. I have a regimen of teeth wipes, putting a K9 mouth wash in his water and keeping hair from growing wildly by his mouth.

| Also, there is a product called orapup that will be available in the market soon...i pre-ordered one but it'll only be here in december, I'll let you know if it really works... basically, they took the idea that in order to cure bad breath in humans not only the teeth have to be brushed, but also the TONGUE....and they are applying it to dogs. It's interesting but I'm not sure if it works.... Bye Bye, Bad Dog Breath - Orapup watch their youtube video, it explains it better
