| New to forum..My baby just had FHO surg! Ok so I just wrote a really long winded story for you guys and then accidently erased it all!! So I'll make it shorter lol My little guys name is Sebi (short for Sebastian) he's 11 months old and just hit 3lbs this month! He means the absolute world to me! Just last week he was hurt while my daugter was having her birthday slumber party..All the girls decided to pile up on the bed and hide from Sebi so here he comes running around the corner ready to play and one of the girls falls on him! My heart sinks and I went into panic mode...my mom was there to stay with the girls (thank god) so me and my boyfriend rush off to the ER..after some x rays and pain meds we leave and prepare for surgery on Tues (this happened Sat). So here we are a week after surgery and things are going very well...he walks on his leg just fine except when he is standing still he will lift it. We get the stitches out on Thurs and the vet will do some additional X-rays. So here is where my worry is...What if it didn't heal correctly? What if he continues to have hip problems for the rest of his life? I feel so much guilt he is such a happy, hyper, loving little guy...I can't believe I let this happen. Have any of you gone through with a FHO? If so how has your experience been? Are things back to normal? I appreciate any and all replies. Thanks so much!! |

| Awe poor guy... I can't give any info on the subject with his injury BUT I can tell you that accidents happen so you can not blame yourself the main thing is your took him to get treatment and are doing everything you can to help him heal I have had 5 knee surgeries over the years and before the 2nd one I was flat out told I would never run or be able to go to the gym again or be able to bend my knee 100%... I proved the Dr wrong yea I have pain but just push through it so I am sure your little guy will do the same as long as he has a loving family supporting him

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Welcome to the group. I am sorry what happen to your little guy. Accidents happen. You did what a good mom would rush him to emergency and how he is on the road to recovery. Did they recommend physical therapy ? I would all to your vet if they didn't. That might help |

| Hi and welcome to YT! P-Nut, now 14 months old, just went through his 2nd FHO surgery (due to Legg-Calve-Perthes) - his "reactions" were very different each time. First one was in August and he was pretty much flattened/couldn't move for days. After he got his Fentanyl patch off, he started hopping around pretty well. He started touching the ground with his leg about a week after surgery and it took a couple of weeks for him to put much weight on it.Within about a month, you'd never know he'd had surgery - there was no limp, nothing indicative of what he'd been through. It was crucial to keep him from putting weight on the leg for the first few days, then follow the rehab instructions. This time, he had surgery 2 weeks ago and had a much easier recovery, was alert from the start and tried to use the leg much earlier than last time. Two weeks out and he's putting some weight on it, we're doing short walks and the vet says he's coming along nicely. Wishing you all the best with your little guy - I know it's rough, but there's a huge potential that he will be just fine! -Sherry |

| If you had a surgeon that is good with this surgery, your baby should heal with no noticable external visual evidence of having had the surgery. I have been thru this surgery with two pups, both were bilateral FHO proceedures, one was from trauma and one was LCP disease. In both cases, the hips were done simultaneously, and both of these babies have healed completely, neither even have a limp. When you look at the babies from behind, the hips are more narrow, but one of the pups is I think close to 2 years post op and the other baby was done just last June. Both owners of these babies say these pups do not appear to have even undergone any such surgery! So, you have nothing to fret about...your baby should heal without a hitch, IF YOU FOLLOW THE POST OP THERAPY INSTRUCTIONS....EXERCISE IS EXCELLENT, BUT NOT OVER EXERTION AND JUMPING AND RUNNING AT BREAK-NECK SPEED. You have to do exercises that are designed to strengthen that hip....just dont allow the pup to over do it! Also, weight management is important! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 11-13-2012 at 02:00 PM. |

| Welcome to YT. I am so sorry this accident happened to your baby. If he is already putting weight on his leg, even if it's just a little for now, that is a very very good sign. My Mylee had FHO surgery due to hip displasia. It didn't heal right and she had to have her surgery redone. I won't get into the details, but she never put weight on her leg for the first 8 weeks after her first surgery which lead to the second. That was 2 years ago and unless you know she had the FHO surgery, you'd never know by watching her run and jump and play today. We're probably one of the very very few that ever even have any problems with that surgery as most small dogs do very well with it. YT was a great source of support for me too, so I'm glad you're here.
