| Can't find Yorkie in any Shelter? (Seattle) Hi, We're looking to adopt a Yorkie and they seem to be non-existent in shelters. I'm not dead set on adopting and would love to buy from a breeder...however, this is our first pup and we have no idea which breeders are legitimate breeders. Anybody have any tips for finding a dog in the Seattle Area? We're not looking for a purebred necessarily either. In fact, the Maltese/Yorkie mixes look adorable. Thanks! |

| You may want to read these threads first. Lots of good info. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ead-first.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ease-read.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ead-first.html As for no yorkies in shelters, many rescues can have names listed at shelters and if a dog comes in that is a particular breed, they may call the rescue to pick up the dog rather than using shelter funds to care for it. That is exactly how I came to foster my current one. Other than that, if not, yorkies go really fast at shelters. No problem with buying one, just make sure you do real research, not just looking at pics and such. Know that yorkie puppies really do benefit from staying with momma until at least 12 weeks of age (lots of socializing skills learned at this age), don't buy from anyone who will sell to the first person with the cash. Be prepared to be interviewed quite extensively from a good breeder. Good luck!

| I don't know any breeders in your area but some good tips are that the parents should have genetic testing, you should be able to see both parents, parents should be an excellent example of the breed, puppies don't go to there new homes until 12 weeks, they are not living in outside buildings or outside, AKC registered, health guarantee, wont use words like teacup or mini yorkie, the breeder will not breed many types of dogs and wont breed mixes. The thing is breeders breed to better the breed and when you breed mixes you are not bettering the breed your just making more of the types of dogs that are in shelters. I hope you find a great breeder and the perfect pup for you.

| That's right about the AKC. Any dogs registered with APRI, ACA, etc is not a reputable agency. It's just a paper registry. However, just bc a dog is AKC does not mean the breeder is reputable, it just means they have decent book keeping skills.

| There are several breeders in the Seattle, Wa area that are also members of the Yorkshire terrier club of America. Check it out on the breeders referral at Yorkshire Terrier Club of America . |

| I'm so glad you posted! I've had my eye on this little guy in our local kill shelter (I'm from Tri-Cities, WA) and was thinking about picking him up to foster. He is available for adoption tomorrow and I was going to go over and meet him. He's a younger guy and looks like a sweetheart. Petango.com ? Meet Schrek, a 1 year Terrier, Yorkshire / Mix available for adoption in PASCO, WA

Which leads me to another question, how much travel can these little guys take in a car when first taking them home? Quote: Thanks again everyone! These quick responses are so helpful and hopefully I'll be able to join this community full-time with a new pup. | |||

| If you are looking to adopt, I agree with those who have suggested Petfinder. You can search by your zip code. Most rescues list their pups on Petfinder. Another site to look at where many shelters list their pups is PetHarbor.com: Animal Shelter adopt a pet; dogs, cats, puppies, kittens! Humane Society, SPCA. Lost & Found.

| I know with volunteering with the GASPCA, Yorkies go superfast. Almost within a day of posting their availability. Good luck on your search.

| It may also be a good idea to contact each local shelter and rescue, fill out their adoption forms, let them know you are strictly seeking a yorkie. While they may not have one now having already completed their prerequirements for a desirable breed they'll know to contact you if possible. I did this and that's how I got an email about Scoobers before he was ever listed as even being at the pound. I was very chattt cathy with several local places abd actually was refered to a pound 200in miles south of me just outside the bay area. The pound was getting a lot of known pup mill puppies dumped there another 100 miles from the area they were microchipped to. The adoprion cordonator there was friends with a network friend of mine we had all been involved in another type of rescue. It helps to look in more metro areas. It is hard often rescues only adopt locally to themselves, however exceptions are always possible. If you can go in places and just meet people turn in your application in person or ask about breed specific waiting list it really does show your commitment and people will remember your face more than an email app.specifying a yorkie. Heck tell them about yorkie talk it makes you memorable in the least.

| As for travel distance, some dogs ride well in the car while others don't. When we got Maggie (she's the one in my avatar), we drove 6 1/2 hours each way to get her. We left at 6:30 in the morning and didn't get back until 8:00 that night. She did extremely well in the car. She was between 13-14 weeks old when we got her. She has always done well in the car. Our maltese (Lilly) also does well in the car and LOVES to go for rides, but our other yorkie (Ginger) HATES riding in the car (trembles, shakes, pants like crazy, and gets very nervous). I wouldn't let traveling to get the pup I want stop me. When the right one comes along, you will know it. There will be an instant connection. Good luck with your search.

| Screened meaning?? I belive you need to do the research on the breeder for yourself. Trust nobody. Thats my Motto. I went to the Seattle Dog show and met some or the breeders there. They were on the Akc breeder site. I got to know them. Waited for ever now I have Moki. IME you buy from a reputable breeder your more likely to get a healthy dog. If something go wrong they will work thing out with you. You will spend alittle more probably but Yorkies are expensive. But buying from a backyard breeder who doesn't know just breeds without testing you may just end up spending $$ on vet bills. JMO Litter Moki came from out of Auburn Wa I think they are ~10 weeks?? Before I got him so around there. I got him at 12 weeks 8hrs http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...s2012-7595.jpg Last edited by ironmike86; 09-07-2012 at 06:10 PM. |
