| Females vs males We had a wonderful male yorkie for 12 years. Best pet friend we have ever had. I've heard that females are a bit more work. Could people reading this comment on the pluses/minuses of males vs females? My wife and I both love yorkies, so we already know they're great. We are thinking of getting another- its been two years and were trying to decide. Thanks everyone Jerry |

| I have a girl and I love it! She does have some what of an attitude but that makes her Callie and I love it. She is very smart. One thing about girls is they generally don't pee down your wall. Also after watching my mom have to clean out her males private part with a liquid wash when he had a small infection I decided its just girls for me

| Depends on the dog. I've had both. Never had a problem with either altered dogs. Unaltered a whole different story. I prefer males. |

| I have two females and wouldn't trade them for anything! They both have very different personalities. One is all girl and one is a complete tomboy! I have never had a male so I don't know about more work or not. But I know that my girls are precious and fun!

Max Main's Mamma Donating YT Member | I have all boys and I love male dogs; however, all dogs have their own personality and I don't think one gender is better than the other. If your trying to evaluate which gender has a better temperment and is easier to train then I would think you would want to look more into bloodlines, etc. Sometimes I do wish I had a girl so I could buy her dresses and bows but I wouldn't give up Max for ANYTHING in the world. I think the most important thing is finding a good breeder. Good luck! I can't wait to see puppy pictures.

| Welcome When we first had dogs years ago they where males. Then we got a female Chihuahua about 20 years ago. Have bought females ever since. I think they are more willing to please you, and so loveable. but that is just my opinion. By the way welcome to Yt. Hope you love it here I do. I have learned so much on here. And have met a lot of friendly people, They are always willing to help you. By the way we have 2 chihuahuas and one yorkie. My yorkie is so mellow compared to my chis. Anne/Luci |

| I have a male Yorkie Georgie and I adore him. I have no experience with female Yorkies but we had a female Boxer who was amazing! I think I would get either really. Georgie loves my husband and I equally and is high maintenance but I think that's a result of him being our little furry Prince and not because of his gender

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Females definitely have different personalities, but I wouldn't say they're more work. Just a different kind of work! My male had aggression and marking issues that I had to address. My female never had either of those. But she's sneaky. She likes stirring up the other dogs in the house just for fun -- stealing prized toys, barking just to get the other to bark. She's also quite the watchdog and will wake me up every time she hears a noise in the house. You might consider a female just for the adventure -- something new to appreciate. Or get both!

| I've had both and I think it all depends on the breeding , just like people they are all different male or female. Some breeders say the boys are more affectionate , I would concentrate more on the match to your family and not the sex. Jmho

My furkids Donating Member | we have 2 females, and added a male to the mix in December. Sadie and Lillie are 7 and 6 yrs old. Bentley just a little over a yr. They all have different personalities. Sadie is my girl, although she won't come to me when I call her unless I have a treat for her. She pretty much keeps to herself. Lillie is a baby! very timid (for no reason) and loves to play. She loves attention but, she too, won't come when called unless there is something in it for her...Bentley, on the other hand....comes when called and LOOOVES attention! Although he loves to be held by all he is mommas boy! He loves to play and get all the attention he can get...He doesn't pee on walls! LOL...He was neutered at 11 months old so he still squats! Although I do prefer females I am glad I got my little man.

| This is a hard question for me. I have 2 girls (mother and daughter) and 1 boy. The little girl (Gracie) I can fuss with her hair and put outfits on her. She is a girly-girl. My boy, is my protector. He is very loveable, I can dress him up too, but he will be the first to let me know someone is coming, etc. He is 11 years old. I love them all equally. They have their own personally, like others have said, and are beautiful babies. I did get my boy (Rocky) fixed, and that helped him with marking. Wish I could help you out with your decision, but I love boys, just as much as girls.

| After having both in many breeds over the years, but primarily females, I think I like the personality of the males. But it may just be the how they were bred as others have suggested. Find the males to be more loving, and less work overall. But that is just my opinion. Have had females in Bichon Frise, Shetland Sheep Dog, Keeshond, Cocker Spaniel, Jack Russell, males in Standard Poodle, Brittany Spaniel, English Setter and now Yorkshire Terrier. The all around easiest dog that I have had was Molly my Keeshond, she was easy to house train and was perfect on a leash or off leash. Loved kids and all small animals and just an all around perfect dog. |

| Boy or Girl Puppy ? I think gender differences become unimportant when Yorkies are spayed or neutered. I have raised, trained and loved both female and male Yorkies. I honestly think behavior is more a personality thing, than a gender thing. Right now I have four Yorkies, two of each. My boys are more physically affectionate. They both are less demanding about being the top doggie and let the girls boss them. Abba Daddy is the sweetest most gentle Yorkie I have ever had. My girls are Gracie who was a rescue and came with many personality hang ups and Ginny Joy I have had since a puppy. Gracie is the boss and more moody than the boys. She also will bite hard and nip the other dogs if they bother her. She is my little selfish diva. I love her 'had a bad start but, look at me now' attitude. Ginny Joy is very sweet, not as kissy as the boys. So to answer the original question, look for personality, spay or neuter after sexual maturity* and don't worry about picking a boy or a girl. Love makes the perfect match. * I have read a lot lately about waiting to spay and neuter until a dog is sexualy mature. My Vet agrees with waiting until 1 year of age.
