this is the first year we have an air conditoner. It has been on for the last 2 days. On occasion she has what sounds like a dry hack, something like a cat with a furball...sort of...it sounds like she wants to hack up some flem or something.....can it be the air conditioner???and if so, what can we do. thanks for your feedback...

If she is hacking for 2 days, I would check with the vet. It may be nothing but normally dogs don't hack or try to cough up something. Could have a sore throat or URI or even pneumonia. When Tibbe hacked, it turned out to be the latter but as I got him in the day he started hacking, we were able to get him on antibiotics immediately. Now hacking doesn't mean she's got pneumonia but just saying that it can be the first signs we see in any number of not very good things. Or she scratched her throat chewing something but in case she's getting ill, you need to get her checked out.

Air conditioners can be so efficient that they take too much water out of the air, and this can cause problems with the mucous membranes. I've known some people who wake up with a bloody nose because their AC's are so efficient. Do you have any way to test the humidity inside your home? I also recommend having a good phone relationship with your vet; he'll be able to tell you what to look out for, and what warrants a visit.

Jaeger does this when the air is cranked-we've had him to the vet and she didn't notice any signs of disease.

I know Sir and I get nosebleeds when the A/C is on full blast, so I imagine that is what the dog is going through too, a reaction to the dry air. When that happens, I make sure he stays hydrated.

I haven't had any coughing from Gracie but she does resort to her winter habits of either finding a cat to cuddle with or getting under her blanket when a warm lap is not available. She prefers tropical conditions at all times. Even though we live in New York State the last several days have been way too hot and humid for my taste so the AC is on.

Maybe your home is a little too cold for your little one? Check your filters to make sure they are clean. They can accumulate many allergens. If none of the suggesting you have been given help it may be time to have her checked out.

I guess hacking isn't the right description. I think it might be the dryness in the air. She hasn't been cough for 2 days, she has on occasion made this sound and she seems to be licking us alittle more then normal.

Make sure there is plenty of water available, and sometimes she may need a shirt or sweater if you keep it really cool.

That happened to my boys too. Some people suggest adding a few houseplants, or even a bowl of water. I've heard you want to keep it between 35%-50%. Humidification | Indoor Humidification | Moisture in your Home

Mine does too. I even called the doctor because it was happening so often. We run the AC every night.
