Puzzeled Help Please

To any of you who remember me, I lost my husband and my yorkie with 1 month. Have a puppy now will be 6 months 29th. Had her since she was 7 weeks. I have had her to the vet on time for all exams, shots, etc. I wanted to have her spayed. She was only 1lb 4 oz. and it took her forever to get to 3 lbs. Last time I took her in, last month she was 3lbs. 9oz. She is very thin compared to my little Dee Dee. She was never over 5 yp 6 lbs. but she was chunkier if that makes sense. BJ feels so thin you can feel her ribs and her back bone. The vet said she is fine. She eats great, just changed her to natural dog food but she still wants her Ceasar in the morning.
My vet has about 6 vets and BJ has seen the two owners. I asked them when I can have her spayed and they said 7 months. I know we had Dee Dee done at or before 6 months. I called her breeder and she said she thinks since I lost my husband and Dee Dee all within the last 6 months, they are worried that until B J gets a little bigger that something could happen to her which would completelly throw me over the edge. She said it may be better to let her go through her heat period and not take the chance. They know what frame of mind I am in and they are trying to protect me. Is it OK to let them go through heat and have them spayed? I always had my females done before but one was a Doberman, one a German Shephard and then Dee Dee my Yorkie. ????????????

I could be wrong, but I am uncertain what harm could come of waiting. I have done it with large mixed breed dogs without issues. With her being that small, I think I'd wait a bit longer to have her spayed, too. Don't know if that helps at all...

Are they going to do presurgery wellness bloodwork that would tell them if she had some genetic disorder that it would not be good to put her under anesthesia. There are health benefits to getting her spayed before her first heat like it will keep her from getting mammary cancer. I know there is more also

Thank you both for the reply. Yes the would do blood work and they also want to do lazer surgery for less bleedig and quicker healing. They just keep sayin 7 months. Maybe they think she has been so small from the first exam att 7 weeks that she will be late coming into heat. I don't know but the breeder said she has her females spayed at 3 or 4 years when she is finished breeding them. I don't know I just want to keep her safe she is all I have now but a lot of great memories.

I absolutely would not let her go through her first heat because getting them spayed before there first heat cuts out the risk of of some cancers and illnesses which it wont completely do for certain ones if you wait until there first heat. I would just make sure that they do blood work before hand. A lot of 3 pounders have been spayed and where just fine.

Yes but breeding dogs spayed that late are at a higher risk of certain cancers then a dog who is spayed before there first heat.

I seldom comment on medical questions. There are others on here that work in the medical area and they know much more about things. But, I will tell you this my Vets specialize in reproduction, breeding etc. And they prefer to do spays on small dogs following the heat cycle because the blood vessels are much more dilated and easy to deal with. All of our girls that are spayed are done like that.

I remember you! I would also wait until she is through teething, so they can remove any retained baby teeth at the same time. You want to prevent having her anesthetized a second time just for that. I hope you are enjoying your lil girl.

Current research is now indicating it is best to wait until after the first heat....this allows for certain hormones that are now being found to be beneficial to proper and complete development of bones, teeth, heart, vascular system, and even areas of the brain and emotional development, to take place. This research has shown that the benefits for waiting to spay until after the first heat faw out weigh the incidences of the risk of development of mammary cancer. I have always told all my new parents it is perfectly OK to spay before a heat cycle....I am now re-assessing my teaching....

There is also a high risk of an accidental pregnancy that way.

I always had mine done before their first heat but that is because I didnt want to breed. Does anyone know if other dogs in the family are affected by the hormone changes during a heat even if yhe olderdogs are spayed/nutered?

To be honest, the 'research' may be 'current' but it's not 'new' information...
