| My yokie is lethargic after rabies vaccination My yorkie, chiara, is 1.5 years old and she is 3 lbs. She got her first rabies shot at 1 year and the 2nd shot yesterday a 1 year 6 months. Today she is limping and lethargic. She slept all day. Has anyone else had this experience? |

| I had something similar with Monkey recently. He just had his 2nd set of rabies, etc. He seemed to feel really sick, tired, slow and just depressed. He was like this for 2 days until he got back to normal. You mentioned something about your her limping?? I don't know about that. That does not sound normal. Which leg is she limping on?

| First of all welcome. I would just keep an eye on her for the next day or so as long as she doesn't get any worse I would think that she would be ok. My baby is 4- 4 1/2 lbs and 4 1/2 months, & when he got his shots he was a little sore and mad at me for a day, but then he was ok. I hope this helps. Please keep us posted. Is she limping on the same side that she got her shots? If so it could just be that it is sore and tender and should be ok.

| I and welcome to YT. Yes, both Mackie and Mellie were very lethargic after their shots. This passed within a day.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome, if she isn't a little better by tomorrow you may want to call your vet just to be sure.

| thanks... Hi thanks for all of the good feedback. She got the shot around her neck around her front right leg. I can't really tell which leg she is limping on. I recall that she limped for 1 day the last time she got a shot, so I am thinking it is just soreness at the injection site. I don't recall her having lethargy from her 1 year rabies shot, but It feels better to know that others have seen this type of reaction. Of course, if she doesn't rebound tomorrow morning, then I will take her to the vet. She got the shot on Saturday, so since she has been sleeping all day today, she should be regenerated by tomorrow. When I mean all day, she is just sitting here, covered by a blanket, all day. Good thing is she still eats, so as long as she is eating and drinking I feel pretty good. The vet gave her a little benadryl shot too, but she had that in the past, and it didn't zonk her our for so long. He gave it to her as a pain killer, I guess. |

| Yes, I too have experience this with my yorkies. But no wonder why your little 3 pounder will get the same vaccination dosage as a 90 pound lab!!!! It frightens me everytime it is time for the rabies vacs.

| What I don't understand from your post is why she is getting a SECOND shot in only 6 months. Even by most state laws now a rabies shot is good for three years isn't it? I have received waivers from my vet for mine and they will not have another rabies shot as I feel they are unnecessary since there has not been a case of canine rabies in my county or the nearby areas in over 25 years. I dogs are small and not alone outside or ever left unsupervised. I know this is not for everyone but I explain this because I am not completely sure of the protocols because I am not concerned about my dogs. I am very opposed to excess vaccines and the damage this does to the health of otherwise healthy pets. You can always request a vlood test before a vaccine to see if the dog has an immunity. To kust give shots on a schedule your vet has imposed for all dogs is not appropriate because vaccines are nt without side effects, some of which are serious. Please read up on Over Vaccination especially now that your baby has had a bad reaction. (Any reaction is a bad reaction) I would ask your vet for a waiver from further rabies on the grounds that another one may be life threatening. |

Trixie is never out alone, but there are lots of wild animals in our area, so better be safe than sorry! Plus, did I mention it was required by law? |

| We just had our girl vaccinated for rabies (she's 17 months) and the vet gave her a 1-year shot. She didn't seem to notice and had no apparent reaction. Jen |

I do however see your point, but such an outlook on the situation is not possible or practicle in my neck of the woods. | |

| Annie had her rabies shot recently and she was lethargic for a couple days... I don't remember her being like this the first time... But I did notice it this time. She didn't seem to want to do anything but sleep almost all day long. I felt so bad for her. This time the vet gave her a two year shot on her hiney... And if by chance my husband touched her the wrong way she screamed bloody murder poor girl... But after a couple days she was back to normal... |
