Anyone here that has *not* had a sick Yorkie?

hi,

I'm just wondering if there are any YTers whose Yorkie hasn't been sick at one point or another in their life? I don't mean an occasional upset tummy (that's normal in my opinion) but I mean something serious. I'm really curious about this, because it seems like SO MANY Yorkiebabies here are always sick or have something wrong with their muscular or skeletal system. =/ Granted, Sprout is not a Yorkie...he's a bunch of different breeds (he's a mutt that happens to have Yorkie in him as well, which I didn't know before). But...he'll be 12 years old in June and he's never had a serious illness or serious injury in his life. He's been sick once, but it was something he got into...nothing long-lasting.

Anyone have healthy Yorkies? I hope??

My boys have never been sick. Max had an eyelash/corneal ulcer problem, but there was a lot that contributed to his problems other than those stinking eyelashes.

I think there are lots of healthy ones, but we hear about the sick ones in the forum because people are seeking help.

Sophie will be 5 this year.I have had her for 3 years and we've not had any major illnesses (knock on wood). However she is a healthy 9lbs with long legs and just perfect!!

I always feel like these threads jinx me, but my Moka is very healthy. She had Pyometra which could have been life threatning, but we caught it at her spay and it was quickly treated not causing her any prolonged problems. I have to brag too, she will be 5 this April and has never needed a teeth cleaning. She has beautiful pearly whites!

It's still early yet, mine are only a little over 2 years old, but so far they are doing great (knock on wood). They've got awesome temperaments, too, so even though they are waaaay off standard, I feel like I hit the jackpot, because those are the two most important things to me.

Rascal hasn't been sick, but he is only 3 months old.

Smokey has been picture perfect health. He does have an extremely mild case of LP, but the vet said it was so mild it was almost not worth mentioning. He does have extremely bad separation anxiety, but that was induced by everything that went on in his life as a puppy before he came to live with us, so I don't count that. I've never had any emergencies or medical problems with him that wasn't able to be easily cared for at home, like the occasional upset tummy.

Now Chip on the other hand... ugh. He has really bad vaccine reactions and allergies. His vaccine reactions have almost killed him in the past. He also has a mild form of LP. Other than that, he's pretty healthy too.

Both of my boys are 5 years old. I hope they continue to be healthy.

I have a sick puppy. Bad LP and the little stinker won't drink water causing bladder crystals.

Jewels has never been to the vet for so much as diahrea problems shes been extremely healthy. Chachis only problems he had that required vet care were mange and a corneal ulcer. They have both been healthy and Ive been lucky I know. they are both good sized yorkies though too and that and good genes make the difference

Levi turns 4 years old this month, and THANKFULLY is in perfect condition. No LP, no genetic issues. His teeth are shiny, white, and still haven't warranted a dental. He is active and happy and healthy.

We had one scare with a weird little bump on his leg, but it cleared right up with a steroid. Levi and I have been very lucky and very blessed.

I think it is wonderful to hear about all these healthy Yorkies. I think we need to hear *more* about the healthy ones, too. Otherwise people (including me) might start getting nervous about the overwhelming health issues that SO many are sadly battling.

I was starting to think ALL Yorkies were chronically sick! Very naive of me...but I've stated several times that I AM naive so it goes with the territory.

SO HAPPY TO SEE all these healthy furbabies!!!

I don't think all yorkies are sick, you just hear it more because people come here looking for help. It's as Kristin said. Another factor could be where we acquired our sickly pooches. (byb, puppy mill, pet store...)

I'm sure there are lots of healthy furbutts out there. Their mommies and daddies dont come to the forum asking for help.

I had a Cairn Terrier when my sons were young that developed a genetic disease and when my vet looked at me with a tear in his eye and said “damn backyard breeders” it was a life changing moment. It was devastating watching my sons see our little dog deteriorate, and at the time there was no treatment for his condition. Over the years I had several pound dogs that were relatively healthy, but it wasn’t until Yorkietalk, I learned that there were breeders who not only didn’t breed for the money, they actually cared about the future of the breed and did what was necessary to increase the chances of having healthy offspring. I found a great breeder and Joey has been very healthy besides and vomiting scare which could have been a spider bite, and an eye ulceration. The problem is that Yorkies are extremely popular, and so many people think it’s an easy way to make money, so they breed animals who haven’t even been health checked, and keep on passing genetic diseases down the line. In the case of my Cairn Terrier, it was a brother sister mating and the breeder assured me that’s very common in the dog world. It may be common, but it’s inbreeding, not line breeding, and very bad for offspring. Sorry about the lecture, I feel so strongly about this, the financial cost of a sick dog is one thing, the emotional costs will bankrupt you!
