| Please help! My yorkie puppy will die My Yorkie puppy Bridgett, was diagnosed with portosystemic liver shunt. She needs surgery to save her life! I have been searching for organiazations that could help with the cost for weeks. A little history on Bridgett: I bought her from a breeder while in Arkansas on vacation on 9-28-11. I live in California. She was 10 weeks old. After I picked her up, I noticed she was making sound, like she was choking or gaging. Turns out she had kennel cough. I called the breeder the next day. He said "she had her bordatella shot. Maybe it's your air conditioner". I didn't know "anything" about kennel cough. I just told him that we would keep an eye on her. She also didn't want to eat or drink. She also slept alot. We we got back home to California and she kept getting worse. After having her for only one week, I took her to my vet. She had PNEUMONIA! I treated the pneumomia at home, giving her IV fluids SQ, anitbiotics, Nutrical and other supplements I ordered. So, just thinking the kennel cough and pneumonia had taken a toll on her health, I was wondering why she was still looked so bad; thin, looking poorly, unhealthy hair coat, and continuing to be dehydarated. She still never wants to eat or drink water. She was looking so bad, I took her back to my vet on12-29-11, and told her that something was really wrong with Bridgett, and we needed to find out what was going on with her. My vet ran several tests, including a complete blood panel and a bile acid test. Her bile acids were "off the chart". So, my puppy hasportosystemic liver shunt. It is a genetic defect that diverts blood around her liver intstead of through it. She needs surgery to survive. I contacted the breeder, and all they said was to ship her back and they would send a replacement when one comes available. They do not give refunds or pay vet bills. Very cold! I don't want another puppy! I love Bridgett! So, until someone can offer financial help with her surgery, which is from $3000 to $6000 at UC Davis, I will continue to treat her by giving her IV fluids SQ, Lactulose, antibiotics, Nutrical, Isotone-SA, Oxydrops and fixing her "low protein" foods. I feel so helpless! She is so tired of being poked with a needle. She starts shaking when she knows what I'm going to do. She does not deserve this! It makes me sick. She is so sweet and loves life. I will not give up on her. It has really taken a toll on me. I just hate so much, watching her go downhill, and having her look up at me as if she is asking, “Why do I feel so bad? Are you going to poke me with that needle again?” Please, I know there is help out there. I desperately need help to getthe surgery Bridgett needs to live. Sincerely, sweetyorkie |

| Can you apply for care credit? It might help with some of the costs.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I do hope you are able to find the funds for her surgery. I presume you never got pet insurance, or really looked at the health guarantee the breeder offered. Finally after all you can do to arrange finances is not a success, for your pups health I urge to surrender her to a rescue, where they can arrange for treatment for her. It must very devastating for you to not have the funds yourself easily available. Unfortunately LS is a genetic disease and one that is relatively common for our breed. I really hope that you can find the money soonest

| I am so sorry! Have you thought about setting up a payment plan with your vet or another vet in your area?

| I wish I was a rich woman but I am not. If you truly can not afford the surgery and you want her to live a full life you might want to consider giving her to a reputable rescue, YTNR, UYR and so on. I pray that this all works out for the little one.

| I agree if you can not afford the vet bills you might want to look into giving her to a reputable rescue. I am not sure what you have going on but you can always get a 2nd job to help pay for her treatment, maybe getting care credit, or a credit card.. taking a loan out, something like that. If it was my dog I would be doing whatever I had to do to get the treatment and surgery needed! I would be selling things in my house if needed.

| I'm sorry to hear about you puppy. It is a tragic situation. This is the very reason that some people on this forum are so against puppy mills and back yard breeders. I hope you are able to find someone to help. Taking a loan out would be the quickest if not the least expensive way of getting her help. |

| YTNR has a fund that might be able to help you with finances for Liver Shunt. Here is a link that explains what they do. I am not sure exactly how it works but I do believe it needs to be repaid. I wish you nothing except the best with your little one. Please do not wait until it is too late to help him. YTNR Liver Shunt Fund Angels

| Praying that the funds become available so that she can get the care she needs. I hate seeing things like this happen, maybe you could get a loan or even borrow from a family member...take care and keep us updated to how she is doing.

| Sending prayers to this little girl. Bless her little heart, there is treatment out there for her, please look into what others has suggested to obtain funds for her surgery. She does deserve a chance and I'm sure there is a rescue that will help if it's the option that needs to be taken. I know you love her very much, please put her life first in your decision. Hugs to you both. Will check back later to see how she is doing.

| I am praying you can find a way to get the money you need for her. If you can't, please do consider surrendering her to Yorkie Rescue...they will save her life. It would be hard to do but it would be the best for your little girl if there are no other options. Will be checking to see how you and she are doing. |
