my 12 week old pup started chewing on wires.....he has lots of bones and a kong to chew on.. so i don't get it! he always gravitates toward the wires for our computer and our space heater!!

Puppies are like toddlers...they want what they aren't supposed to have. You have to puppy proof your home like you would if you had a baby crawling around on the floor.

Lots of supervision! And when you can't watch your puppy, put him in a safe place like an ex-pen or gated room that's puppy proofed. My Izzy used to love wires (she chewed my son's phone charger TWICE because he left it out). Putting some men's cheap deorant on stuff you don't want chewed really works too.

Bitter apple works great, but if it's electric wires I wouldn't take a chance, put these out of sight or in pvc pipe.

You can get some Critter Cord... of spray it with Bitter Apple....

Riley got electrocuted when he was a tiny puppy. I always watched him like a Hawk.... Well I had answered a phone call and had been on the phone, not even 2-mins. and he had slipped under the tv stand and behind the tv. He chewed right through the cable box cord. I head a loud pop and he came running out, SCREAMING and looking very very terrified!! Once I finally was able to get hold of him and calmed him down I checked him all over.... he was doing a cough/gag type of thing.

I ran him to the vet and they said he was very lucky!! A lot of pups are immediately knocked unconscious, or dead.... and if not, they can develop water in their lungs... which is really really bad!!

Riley was totally fine!! I did order some crittercord but he hasn't gone near a wire or cord since.

Aw poor baby. They sure are quick little boogers!!!! Glad he was fine. You must have freaked out!!

I agree you have to cover them or move them.

i puppyproofed my house the best i could! the only things that are out are th space heaer and computer wires..which i tried to hide the best i can! when i'm not home he's crated or in a blocked off area, depending on how long i'll be gone.. i was just wondering if there are products to spray on the wires, when my cat was a kitten he chewed our phone cord like 5 times so we sprayed it with this stuff we got at the pet store... he is maybe 12 years old now and hasnt touched a wire since! haha

The bitter apple comes in a spray and I know it used to come in gel form, also. Not sure if it still does.

Bitter apple works great. Joey loved to chew on a wicker basket and I sprayed the bitter apple and let him near the basket, that was enough so he never touched it again. I wouldn't leave them around cords though for the first year. There are various things that you can buy and you can put the cords inside. 5-ft. Cord Mate White Channel Cord Cover I used the Bitter Apple on things like blinds, baskets and furniture. Bitter Apple for Dogs: 8 Ounce They sell it at Petsmart.

morgan already chewed the cord off my lamp but it was turned off thank god i covered my cords and dont leave him alone in any room

Wow, you are lucky, it so important to remember they are teething that first year and have a compulsive need to chew even after the first year. Make sure you have plenty of chewing toys and sticks available. Of course the chewing sticks should only be used when you can supervise, but the toys are safe even when you aren't there.

A 12 week old puppy should never be allowed loose in the home unattended. You need a play pen to keep him in when you are not able to watch him.

For us, with all of our furkids, it was always just a matter of consistantly saying no and redirecting their attention. Some learned quicker than others, one actually bit through a strand of Christmas tree lights and got zapped (I was at work and hubby was home when it happened.) He said Jake basically flew across the room when it happened. After that, he never touched any wire ever again!!

As stated, that young of an Animal, should be supervised, or, have limited access when you are not at home. I (fortunately) have several barriers, which can be set, to our Utility Room only, then it and the Kitchen, then those and the Breakfast Room. Which allows a young Dog "earned" access.

But beyond that, I have a couple old useless wires (one standard Electrical Cord, and one Coaxial Cable) which I use to train mine. I "electively" throw them on the floor when we are training, and then do the "NO's" when it approaches them. I play with Toys close to the wires, touch them, and "sorta" encourage closeness. But when they sniff or mouth, it's a good strong NO !

This puts their exposure to any Wires, on my time, not theirs
