| I am such a BAD mommy!! I just took my little 5 month old girl to the groomers and they told me that they are going to have to shave her!! I brush her and bath her myself and this is the second time to the groomers. I took her last month and they mentioned that her harness, was causing some matting and not to leave it on her for long periods of time. So, I immediately changed to another harness, and only put it on for walks. But, this groomer said that her entire coat is matted. To look at her, she looks beautiful, but it is matted at her skin. I brushed her this morning, but my brush is not going all the way down to her skin! I feel so terrible. I know that it will grow back, but she will look just awful. |

YT Addict | I know exactly how you feel. I just had Abby shaved for the same reason. The groomer told me I was using the wrong brush and that I needed a medal comb and if it didn't go thru then to use a soft slicker until mat was gone. However once you bathe them with a mat it will lock. On the bright side Abby is very short now but her hair feels beautiful. No more cottony puppy coat. It will grow again and you will get used to it. Wait till you see how easy it is to care for your pup now. I am sorry I didn't get Riley shaved as well. lol |

| Dont use a brush they dont remove mats. Use a steel comb, or as I use , I have a comb with rotating pins and I love it ! it helps me so much with mats.

| No never use a slicker on a yorkie ! I used a slicker on Fido when he was a pup and it ruined his coat (he had floor length coat!) so I had to shave him all down Just use a comb with rotating pins for matts, then you can use a pin brush when the coat has no matts in it anymore. Brush her everyday, bathe 1 a week but until the puppycoat goes its enough to bathe every 2 weeks and if you think she's dirty.

| I use a Madan pin brush and its just wonderful. Jenny (YT user mimimomo) sells them. toplinepet.com I used to have trouble w/ Finnigan's coat getting matts under his harnesses also. I now have a conditioning spray I use b/w baths when I brush as well.

| You need better equipment for grooming your pup. I have a Madan Brush and Mustache comb, and an Insinis brush. They each serve a purpose I swear! The Madan really separates each strand of hair, and doesn't pull. Plus, I loved it so much, it's now my brush. I use the comb on Kaji's face, and the Insinis finds even the tiniest matts so you can get them before they get worse.

YT Addict | I had reservations about the slicker. I am really glad I did not get it. I will get one of those brushs. Abby is really good about getting brushed so if I have the right brush this problem may resolve but her coat does feel so much silkier since she was shaved. I think I will continue to keep her belly short because she doesn't like that getting brushed, and it will also keep her cleaner since she is so low to the ground. |

| Heidi's hair also gets matted from her harness no matter which one I put on her. Because of that, just around the house she wears a collar, and when I put a leash on her she wears the harness. It helps tremendously. Also about the metal comb & madan brush -- I had a Yorkie previous to Heidi for almost 18 yrs. I always used a slicker brush. I just didn't know any better. When I read so many people on here saying how much they liked the metal comb & madan brush I decided I'd give it a try. The Yorkie that I had used the slicker brush on, she had a beautiful coat but it did break off and never got fully to the floor. I am now a huge fan of that metal madan comb & the brush. When she goes somewhere with me, I usually carry her brush & comb in my purse just like it was mine own. Lol

| Mina's hair is kept short, approx 3/4" long, except her face. Now that her puppy hair is gone, she hardly ever gets a matt anywhere. I use a plastic comb like my daddy used to carry in his pocket. Ya, I know it isn't the "proper" grooming tool, been grooming dogs for about 30yrs. But it works,it wasnt' expensive,it doesn't pull her hair, she never has matts and she likes it enough to just lay there and let me comb all I want. Ive tried a pin brush and a metal comb and she doesn't like either of them. |

| Puppy hair in my opinion is very hard to keep tangle free Callie ended up haveing mats when she went for her first groom that I did not think where there because I was brushing and combing her everyday. Awwww she wont look awful its hard for something so cute to look awful it will just be different and take you awhile to get used to the new hair cut.

| The Grayhound combs are wonderful tools for grooming long haired pets. They are metal combs that go to the roots and keep your pet mat free. If you google grayhound comb you can find many places that sell them. There is a site I have seen on this forum called toplinepet.com that sells good quality metal grooming combs for a reasonable amount of money. They are such a good investment for the health and comfort of your pet. I have the medium size for the body and the mustache comb for around the face. The little pin brush in nice to finish off your grooming time. I comb daily to keep up with the fur. Just run the comb through a few times once a day and you are set until bath time. Plastic combs will not get the dead fur out of the coat and regular brushes will not either. |
